POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 14, 2017) -- Sophomore forward Steve Palecki notched a career-high 13 points, as the Vassar College men's basketball team (5-10, 1-6 Liberty) lost to St. Lawrence (12-2, 5-0 Liberty) at the Athletics & Fitness Center on Saturday, 97-79.
Palecki reached his new personal record on five-of-six shooting, as four Brewers registered double figures in the scoring column: Jesse Browne and Alex Seff totaled 18 points apiece, while Mickey Adams tallied 11. Tony Caletti added nine points and three assists off the bench for VC.
Vassar led in the early going at 4-2, thanks to a nifty look-away layup by Hunter Gettings, but St. Lawrence scored the next 14 points to take a 16-4 lead after a layup by Riley Naclerio. The Saints advantage would swell to as much as 20 at the halftime buzzer, as Willie Zachery nailed a triple to send the visitors into the locker room with a 46-26 lead.
After the break, VC made a late charge in getting to as close as 12 points thanks to some hot shooting by Browne and Seff, but the Saints were able to close out the game from the free throw line.
St. Lawrence was paced by the double-double from Naclerio, who finished with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, grabbing a game-best 12 rebounds as well. All five starters were in double figures, including Ben Crawford with 19 points and Zachery and Kyle Kobis each with 13 points. Dom DeRegis came off the bench to pour in 16 points as well, as the Saints shot 51.5 percent from the field on the contest (34-66).
The Brewers shot 45 percent from the floor, 31 percent from three, which included a 59.5 percent clip (22-37) in the second half. Vassar was 0-12 in the first half from downtown, but rebounded in the second half to nail 8-of-14 from three-land led by the four triples from Browne.
Vassar will return to the floor on Tuesday evening at 8 p.m., heading north to take on the Engineers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Liberty League action from the East Campus Athletic Village.
