Team Effort Leads Hood to Victory

FREDERICK, Md. - A dozen different players scored as the Hood College men's basketball defeated Messiah 75-58 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Nate Christian and Michael Riley led a reserve unit that scored 41 points in the win. Christian scored a career-high 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting. Riley added 10 points, making 4 of 5 field goal attempts. 
  • Scott Bolen was the only starter to reach double figures with 13 points. He led the Blazers with seven rebounds. 
  • Hood (11-4, 3-3) shot 56 percent from the floor and went 11 of 24 from 3-point range (46 percent). 

How it Happened

  • The Falcons (7-7, 2-4) came out firing, jumping ahead 17-6 after Luke Cable knocked down a 3-pointer with 14:29 left in the first half. 
  • The Blazers turned to the bench to get back in the game with a 14-0 run. Christian scored the final five points of the run to give Hood a 20-17 edge with 9:31 left in the first half. The Blazers took a 14-point lead in the final minute of the half on a 3-pointer by Jared Ruiz before taking a 40-26 advantage into halftime. 
  • Christian hit a 3-pointer for a 59-42 lead with 11:32 to play, but Messiah mounted a comeback. The Falcons scored the next nine points and trailed just 59-51 after a Logan Long jumper. 
  • Messiah eventually trimmed the deficit to seven, 64-57, after BJ McHenry hit a pair of free throws with 2:52 remaining.
  • A layup by Daniel Wegener followed by a Tanner Ruths 3-pointer and a bucket by Bolen put the game out of reach with 1:28 to go. 

Notes

  • Long finished with a game-high 19 points and Clippinger scored 15. 
  • Hood outrebounded the Falcons 37-29 in the contest.
  • Messiah shot just 34 percent for the evening and was just 8 of 29 from 3-point range.
