BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After seeing its 16-point cushion erased during the initial portion of the 2nd half, Gordon College returned with a 15-2 run en route to securing a 74-62 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball victory over the University of New England on Wednesday evening (Jan. 11) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Fighting Scots (8-6, 5-2 CCC) led 42-26 early in the closing frame, before the Nor'easters (4-10, 2-5 CCC) roared back in a span of 5:25 to gain a 45-44 edge. CJ Autry canned four triples in the 19-2 spurt.
Gordon slowed the momentum with a couple baskets, only to see Autry knot things at 48-all with another three-pointer. Then, at the 9:28 mark, UNE took a 51-48 lead on a trey by Gavin Dibble.
But back-to-back field goals by Garrisson Duvivier restored the advantage for the visitors, and sparked the deciding stretch that left the Fighting Scots on top, 63-53, with 3:43 to go.
Duvivier had eight in the run, and all but two of his 16 points in the period, while contributing seven rebounds, eight assists, and three blocks. Jake Haar, who accounted for Gordon's first 11 points of the night, went 4-of-6 from deep to match the 16-point output. Sam Johnson tallied 11 of his 14 points following halftime, and made it a double-double by grabbing a game-best 11 boards.
The Fighting Scots out-rebounded their opponent by a 41-25 margin, and shot 46 percent from the floor in the contest.
Autry's 2nd-half hot-streak of 15 points ended up pacing the Nor'easters, and he pulled in a team-high six caroms. Jean-Luc Parker registered 12 points, and Dibble totaled 10. Drew Coveney had nine points and five assists.
UNE posted a 12-for-24 effort from long range and committed just six turnovers in the match, but the hosts struggled with their accuracy from inside the arc. Big Blue converted only 30 percent (11-of-37) on two-point tries.
Gordon, which drained 6-of-12 three-pointers in the 1st stanza, had a 38-26 lead at the midway break.
The Fighting Scots return to Wenham for a Saturday date (3 p.m.) with Roger Williams University (6-1 CCC), while the Nor'easters head for Curry College (0-7 CCC) at the same time.
