MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's basketball capped an unbelievable weekend which saw 275 points scored in two games and a +90 point differential in those two games as they rolled past the Millsaps Majors by the score of 133-85.
The Lynx move to 3-0 in conference play and is currently out scoring conference opponents by an average of 35.3.
Rhodes had another strong shooting day, going 54 of 97 from the field (56%) and 20 of 44 from behind the arch (46%). The Lynx only got to the free throw line six times, but connected on five. Millsaps shot 44% from the field and 25% from deep. The Majors got to the free throw line 30 times, but Rhodes forced 31 turnovers while only giving it away 15 times.
The Lynx were on fire in the first half, shooting 66% of the field and connecting on 11 threes as they built a substantial lead.
Rhodes forced four turnovers in the first four minutes and were red hot from the field a platoon of Lynx built a 13-6 lead. Millsaps closed it to three points before back-to-back 3-pointers from freshmen Owen Galvin and Kendrick Ashby made it a 19-10 game.
Millsaps got it down to 19-14, but an 18-3 run by Rhodes thanks seven points from freshman Jake Nestlehutt and senior Tyler Gee owning the paint with six points as Rhodes suddenly had a 20 point lead at 37-17.
It only got worse for the Majors as junior Anesu Nyawata heated up, hitting three 3-pointers. Galvin also hit three while Nestlehutt connected on two as Rhodes built their lead over 30. Nyawata had 13 first half points while Gee was a perfect 5 of 5 with 10 as Rhodes would go into the break with a 77-42 lead.
In the second half, as the energy from a big crowd began to wear off with such a big lead, the game slowed down a little bit, a rarity from this Lynx squad.
Regardless, Rhodes was able to build on their lead, getting as high as 52 points as they rolled the Majors to the 48 point win. Senior Brennan Sullivan and sophomore Daniel Darst each scored eight points in the second half.
Nyawata led all scorers with 20 points to go with six assists while Nestlehutt, Darst, and Galvin each scored 14 points as the three of them combined for nine 3-pointers. Gee scored 12 to go with four steals and three blocks while freshman Mitch Weatherford scored 11 and Sullivan added 10.
Darst flirted with a triple double added seven rebounds and six assists to his 14 points while Weatherford had six assists and Sullivan and senior J.J. Weir had four. Junior Ian Harrison finished with eight points and 11 boards while freshman Bryce Berrycame up with four steals. Rhodes had 23 steals on the afternoon.
The Lynx are 6-7 overall to go with their undefeated conference record as they prepare to take on the only other team undefeated in conference play, Centre. The Lynx and Colonels will lock up this upcoming Friday in Danville, Ky. at 8 PM ET.
