Stone’s double-double leads Sewanee to an 85-83 double overtime win over Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. (Jan. 3, 2017) – A 26-point, 12-rebound double-double from senior Brody Stone led the Sewanee men's basketball team to an 85-83 double overtime win over Piedmont, Tuesday, inside Cave Arena.

A close game throughout, the contest featured nine ties and four lead changes. Sewanee's largest lead was midway in the first half when Stone hit a jumper to make it 28-17. From there, Piedmont rallied back to pull to within six, 36-30, at halftime.

In the second half, neither team led by more than eight points. After a three by Stone with 15:56 left in regulation, Piedmont scored seven of the next nine points. The Lions tied the contest at 59-59 when Kelly Assinesi hit a layup with 4:24 left. 

Sewanee took a five-point lead, 68-63, with 52 seconds left after a Clay Born layup. However, a layup by Trae Gaines and a three by Taylor Mills with five seconds remaining sent the contest into the first overtime.

Neither team led by more than a possession in the first OT. In fact, the score remained tied at 76-76 the final 43 seconds. In the final extra period, Piedmont took an early lead. However, a free throw by Stone and a jumper by Born pulled Sewanee to within two with 3:29 left.

Sewanee retook the lead when freshman Adrian Thomas hit a pair of free throws with 2:30 left. Stone gave the Tigers the final lead with a free throw with 52 seconds to go. Piedmont had one last chance to win or tie the contest, however, a three by Gaines at the buzzer missed.

Along with Stone, Born finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Thomas also played well with 16 points and seven boards while fellow reserve Cam Caldwell pitched in 10 points.

Gaines led Piedmont with 22 points and six rebounds.

Sewanee now returns to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with a road game at Berry Friday night.
