Red-Hot Shooting Paces Lightning Past Thomas, 99-64

Bronx, N.Y. -- The Lehman College men's basketball team had one of their best shooting performances all season as they rolled past Thomas College, 99-64, as the final part of day one in the Coaches vs. Cancer Shootout Thursday night at the APEX Center.

The Lightning (5-5) were paced by Luis Hernandez who led five players in double figures with a team-high 19 points along with six assists and four rebounds. Jean Marcial finished with 15 points, while Andrew Utate added 13 points with three triples to go along with nine boards and five helpers. Mylo Mitchell came off the bench with 10 points and five assists.

Leading the Terriers (5-4) was Tyheem Simon, who poured in a game-best 21 points with eight rebounds, while Jordan Derosby added 12 points and eight boards in a losing effort.

Lehman ran out of the game shooting at a blistering pace, hitting on 61.4% (43-70, 8-for-9 from three-point range) of their shots including a remarkable 65.7% from the field (23-for-35) in the first half. They scored 42 points in the paint, and were also dishing the ball out tonight by dropping off 22 assists on 43 field goals.

The Lightning's strong defense forced 20 turnovers which were converted to 23 points, including scoring 14 points by way of the fastbreak.

Stevens and Thomas will kick off the second day of the shootout Friday at noon. The Lightning will face Castleton, who topped Stevens 62-57 on Thursday, as the final game of the event at 6:00 p.m. Live stats and streaming video for both games will be made available on LehmanAthletics.com
