Guilford Scores Road Win at Birmingham Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Guilford College's Dominique Henderson and Alston Thompson each tallied 13 points as the Quakers claimed a Thursday evening victory over Birmingham Southern College, 70-59.
The Quakers (6-2) opened up the first 3:30 of the contest with an 8-0 run, spurring a 15-3 run that lasted the opening 4:47 of the first half. Guilford's lead extended to 15 points with 6:37 left in the first half off the back-end of Thompson's two free throws. The Quakers extended their lead as large as 18 points in the half off a Carson Long lay-up with1:44 left in the half. Guilford amassed ten offensive rebounds in the half while shooting 51.3 percent from the field. Birmingham Southern only mustered seven field goals in the half only posting seven total rebounds.
The Panthers (3-6) held the Quakers without points for the first 5:43 of the second half, but Guilford held Birmingham Southern to only five points in the same stretch with Guilford holding a 12-point lead ten minutes through the second half. The Quakers boosted their lead back to 16 points off of a Mason Reyer three-pointer one minute later as the Panthers brought the lead down to single digits for only a total span of 1:31 in the half as the Quakers regained their double-digit lead on the way to victory in the closing minutes. Guilford boosted their offense in the half by sinking 17 free throws in the period.
Thompson added nine rebounds on his four-of-nine shooting effort while posting a five-of-six effort from the foul line. Henderson shot four-of-eight with five rebounds while posting a four-of-six effort from the charity stripe. Jarrod Rogers led Guilford's bench, who out-scored the Panthers with a 30-12 advantage, scoring 11 points to represent the final Quakers' player in double-figure scoring.
Ian Thom led the Panthers with 12 points on four-of-11 shooting. Harrison Deneka and James McLean each added ten points a piece.
The Quakers finished the contest shooting 42.6 percent from the field compared to the Panthers' 38.5 percent. Guilford dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Birmingham Southern, 43-30, thanks to 15 offensive rebounds. Birmingham Southern held a small edge in second-chance points, 16-15, The Panthers held a 30-22 edge in the paint while the Quakers posted a 16-14 advantage in points off of turnovers.
The Quakers return home Saturday for their final contest before breaking for the Christmas holiday, hosting North Carolina Wesleyan College for a 3 p.m. contest inside Ragan-Brown Field House.
