Senior Tim Daly became the 30th player in Christopher Newport history to reach the 1,000 point plateau Sunday, as the sixth-ranked Captains defeated the Spartans of York College, 85-59, at the Freeman Center. CNU improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference.

"I was really pleased for Tim that he was able to get his 1,000th point here at home in front of his family and friends," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "He's been such a warrior for us over the last four years, I'm very proud of his accomplishments."

Daly, from Richmond, finished the game with 15 points and six rebounds, and now has 1,001 points for his career. His 1,000th point came on a second half free throw, and he became the fourth player to reach the 1,000-point mark in the last seven seasons joining Conley Taylor, Tra Benefield, and Mike Cherry.

The Captains, ranked sixth in the country this week, opened the game Sunday on an 8-0 run, and led by as many as 15 in the opening half. York recovered to cut the lead to six at the intermission, 41-35.

The second half opened as the game did, with Christopher Newport scoring the first dozen points to open a 53-35 advantage before the Spartans got on the board. The Captains would then open the lead to as many as 27 (81-54) en route to the 26-point triumph.

Junior All-American Marcus Carter led the second-half surge, scoring 14 of his game-high 16 points in the second stanza. Junior Aaron McFarland (14) and senior Rayshard Brown (10) were also in double digits for CNU.

CNU's defense was dominant in the second half, allowing just 24 points to the Spartans. Christopher Newport has now held its opponents to 60 points or less in all six victories this season. The Captains also held York to just 35 percent shooting for the game.

York, now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the CAC, was led by senior Dalton Myers, who finished the game with ten points and is now just four point shy of 1,000 for his career.

CNU now holds an 8-1 lead over York in the all-time series, and the Captains have won the last eight meetings.

Christopher Newport now will prepare for a first-place showdown Saturday at Salisbury. The Sea Gulls are 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Capital, and will host CNU in a 4:00 p.m. start at the Maggs Center Saturday.
