Brockport claims SUNYAC lead with 94-88 win over Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With three Golden Eagles surpassing 20 points, The College at Brockport men's basketball team took it to the reigning regular-season State University of New York Athletics Conference (SUNYAC) champions, Plattsburgh St. on Saturday, downing the Cardinals, 94-88.

 

The Golden Eagles improve to 8-1 on the season and stay unbeaten in league play at 4-0, while the Cardinals fall to 6-3 overall, and 2-2 in the SUNYAC.

 

Clifton Lyerly led all scorers, netting 28 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and knocked down three triples, while Hamed Shamseldin was not far behind, with 24 points and seven assists on the day. Freshman Justin Summers tallied his highest total of the season, adding 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds for the first double-double of his Brockport career. 

 

In an all-out battle, the Golden Eagles used a hot 43.8 percent shooting from the field and a scorching 41.2 three-point shooting percentage to bypass the tough Plattsburgh squad. In a game that featured 11 lead changes and 14 ties, neither team was able to establish more than a 10-point lead.

 

In the first half, the Green and Gold saw a slim lead on several different occasions, but saw Plattsburgh post a double-digit advantage by the 4:38 mark with a 38-28 edge.

 

Brockport pieced together an 8-0 run, with a layup from Summers sparking the spurt and a Cordell Torres triple to top it off to cut the Golden Eagle deficit to just two, at 42-40 with less than a minute to play. Three Cardinal free throws to close the half sent Brockport into the break trailing 47-42.

 

In the second half the back and fourth action continued, with the Golden Eagles erasing the Plattsburgh lead on several different occasions, but unable to close the door on their counterparts. At the 7:48 mark, a Torres free throw gave Brockport a one-point lead, and the Green and Gold never looked back.

 

The one-point advantage quickly turned to five, following a Shamseldin jumper and a Torres layup, pushing to an 82-77 edge with 6:29 to play.

 

Following the 14th tie of the contest, Brockport used a Summers layup and the charity stripe to edge out to a six-point lead, their largest of the contest with just 22 seconds to play. The Green and Gold held off the Cardinals, and held on to the lead down the stretch to secure the 94-88 victory.

 

Brockport forced their fewest turnovers of the season, with 18 Cardinal turnovers, which they used for 21 points. The Green and Gold also outmanned Plattsburgh in the paint, with a 46-36 edge.

 

The Golden Eagles will enjoy a break from play, returning in the New Year, when they head to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on Carnegie Mellon University on Jan. 2.
