Balanced Scoring Effort Leads Marlins to Road Win

DANVILLE, Va. – Four players scored in double-figures Wednesday night as the Virginia Wesleyan College men's basketball team rolled to a 104-76 victory over Averett University Wednesday night.

The Marlins jumped out to an impressive 55-30 halftime lead behind hot shooting, from inside and beyond the arc. Virginia Wesleyan shot 62.5% (20-32) in the first half, including a 56.3% (9-16) mark from three-point range. What amplified the scoring margin even more was the fact that VWC held Averett to a 0-4 mark from three-point range before intermission.

The Cougars scored first, but a 2-0 lead would be the only one as the Marlins ran off a 21-4 spurt to go up 21-6 with 14 minutes to play in the first half. Six different Marlins scored during the run, led by six points from Andre Banks.

Virginia Wesleyan scored 44 bench points in the game, largely behind the play of two freshman, Lamont Steward and Percy Burt. Steward scored a career-best 13 points on 5-5 shooting, contributing four rebounds and two blocks in 11 minutes of play. Burt contributed seven points, also a career best, to go with bests in rebounds (5) and assists (2).

Khory Moore led the squad with 23 points and four rebounds, while Tim Jones and Josh Williams tallied 17 and 13 points, respectively.

Charles Bryant led Averett (1-5) with 16 points and five rebounds.

Virginia Wesleyan (6-2) will break while the student-athletes take final exams, returning home for a matchup with Wesley College Saturday, December 17 at 2 p.m.
