ARLINGTON, Va. – A late second-half comeback and two closing-seconds free throws by senior Michael Anderson pushed the Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team past Southern Virginia University on Wednesday night, 67-65, to hold onto its untouched Capital Athletic Conference record at 3-0.
Trailing for much of the game but staying close, the Saints struck late in the second half with a 9-2 run to take over the advantage, 62-58. Cashing in on five of his career-high 19 points in the run was freshman Ibrahim Kamara, who dropped in a free throw and two layups.
The Knights didn't back down however, drawing the score even at 65-65 with just 17 seconds remaining in the contest. Bringing the ball back up the court for its final offensive possession, the Saints worked the ball around looking for the opportunity to strike. Anderson, with the ball at the top of the key, found some room down the right side where he drove and drew the foul at the rim to send him to the line.
Knocking in both free throws with four seconds left, Marymount called the final timeout to chalk up the defensive play to hold out for the win. The Knights managed to push the ball up the court quickly in the closing seconds and got off a jumper from the right wing, but clashing off the rim was all the shot produced as the Saints held on for the victory.
Marymount was paced by junior Dimitri Rucker with a game-high 20 points, as he posted his fifth-straight game in double figures. Beyond Rucker's and Kamara's scoring nights, Anderson added 12 points including 6-for-7 at the charity stripe.
The Saints will look to stay perfect in league play heading into 2017 when they take on the University of Mary Washington on Saturday, December 10 on the road. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
