Montclair, NJ – Junior forward Rahsann Johnson registered a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds as Montclair State scored 23 of the final 24 points in a 65-40 win over local rival William Paterson on Wednesday evening.
Daniel Ramis added 12 points off the bench as the Red Hawks broke open a close game in the final eight minutes to snap a two-game losing streak. MSU (3-4, 2-2 NJAC) won its second straight game against the Pioneers and now lead the all-time series 98-74.
Montclair led 27-26 at the half and had a modest lead of 35-29 with 16:49 left after Johnson connected on a jumper. After the teams went scoreless over the next four minutes, Johnson score again for an eight-point advantage which was whittled down to 37-35 on a three by the Pioneers' Joseph Taylor.
The Red Hawks pushed the lead back to 42-35 on a three by Vince Anfield however a powerful follow-up dunk from Turell McClendon kept William Paterson in striking distance at 42-39 with 8:18 to go.
But that would be the last field goal of the game for WPU, which did not put another point on the board until 40 seconds remaining in the contest – a free throw by Joseph Haines. The Pioneers missed their last nine field goal attempts.
Meanwhile, the Red Hawks were pulling away with their 23-point run. Eddie Emedoh started things off with a jumper and 11 straight points from Ramis made the score 57-39 with 3:50 left. Emedoh threw down a powerful dunk on the next possession and a three by Justin Porter with 1:38 to play gave MSU a 65-39 advantage.
Jordan Roberson finished with nine points and 11 rebounds while Jarrett Bogus added eight points and seven rebounds. Jovanni Chatham contributed six points, four rebounds and five assists for Montclair, which outrebounded WPU 55-36.
MSU is back in action on Saturday, December 10 in Glassboro against Rowan University at 3:00 pm.
