Nazareth improves to 4-0 with win at Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. -- Tyler Stenglein combined game highs in points (22) and rebounds (7) and freshman Cody Green came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points Wedneday as visiting Nazareth improved to 4-0 overall with a 69-54 men's basketball victory over Alfred State in non-conference action.

Sophomore Brendan Wind added nine points and seven assists as the Golden Flyers remained unbeaten while Alfred State dropped to 0-5. The Golden Flyers host a pair of doubleheaders this weekend as part of the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. Nazareth plays RIT Friday and Rochester Saturday. Both games start at 8 p.m. St. John Fisher also will be competing with games against Rochester Friday and RIT Saturday at 6 p.m.

Wednesday's game was tight for the first 12 minutes or so. A basket by Wind with 7:10 left in the first half gave Nazareth the lead for good at 16-15 and triggered a 26-8 scoring spree that ended with the Golden Flyers comfortably on top 40-23 at halftime. Green made three of his three-pointers and senior Josh Gillard also connected from long distance to fuel the scoring run. Green finished with 11 points in the half, including a pair of free throws with :39 left to extend the lead to 40-23 before the break.

Early in the second half, Green hit another three-pointer and Gillard added a basket to extend the lead to 49-28 with 16 minutes left. Green hit yet another three-pointer -- his fifth of the game -- and sophomore Daniel Jacob and senior Jack Mulcahy also cashed in from the three-point arc to keep the game one-sided.

Overall, Nazareth went 8-for-14 from three-point range with Green hitting 5-of-6. The Golden Flyers shot 54.3 percent (25-for-46) with Stenglein going 7-for-12 from the floor and 8-for-9 from the free throw line to generate his 22 points.

Marquis Edwards was the high scorer for Alfred State with 17 points; Tyler Elliott added 12.
