GALLOWAY (NJ) – Stockton University scored 60 points in the second half as the Ospreys rallied from a four-point halftime deficit and defeated visiting Delaware Valley University, 99-82, in a foul-filled non-conference game.
Stockton improved to 2-1 on the year while the Aggies slipped to 3-2.
Each team was called for 35 personal fouls with seven players (four DelVal, three Stockton) fouling out. The squads went to the foul line a combined 103 times (72 makes), just two shy of the Division III record.
The Aggies got to the charity stripes 29 times in the first half and converted 21 of them compared to just a 9-for-14 effort by the Ospreys. Seven of the makes came in a 7-0 run late in the stanza, four from Manny Brown and three from Tyliek Kimbrough, as they broke a 36-36 stalemate and eventually took a four-point lead into the break.
Stockton opened the second half with an 8-0 run, but DelVal battled back and tied the contest at 50-50 on a Tyrea Williams tip-in with 13:24 remaining. The Ospreys followed with an 18-5 spurt, before the Aggies countered with a 9-2 run to make it a two-possession game, 70-64, with less than seven minutes to go.
DelVal stayed within range and a Mike Cianciulli triple with 2:28 left cut the deficit to nine, 88-79. However, Stockton picked up nine of its final 11 points at the foul line while the Aggies managed just one free throw during the span for the 99-82 final.
Brown paced DelVal with 19 points while Kimbrough finished with 14 points and three assists. Williams had another double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Ryan Naccarato finished with 10 points and five boards and Alex Matsinye had seven points, six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.
The Ospreys placed five players in double figures, including Kashaun Barnes with a team-high 18 points. Khaliq Ford and Sayvon Williams notched 17 points apiece while Tom Catanoso and Steve Ferebee had 15 and 10 points respectively.
The Aggies return to action on Wednesday, November 30 (7 p.m.) when they travel to Moravian College for a non-conference game.
