NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's basketball earned its first victory of the season with game-high scorer Rodney Morton (Malden, Mass.) providing the winning basket in the final second to sink Coast Guard Academy, 84-82, at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

Morton's heroics capped a 28-point night for the Seahawk junior guard. After Salve Regina sophomore Isaiah Bowman (Roxbury, Mass.) put the Seahawks ahead by two (82-80) with his fifth 3-pointer of the night with 35 seconds remaining, Coast Guard junior Micah Baldez (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) tied the score with a layup off an inbounds pass from Max Lampe (Gettysburg, Pa.).

The Bears, an original member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) before departing after the 1987 season, own a 13-10 edge in the all-time series which began in 1982. Salve Regina has won all four meetings at the Rodgers Recreation Center, and has won the last five meetings in Newport while owning an 8-2 record in meetings with Coast Guard at home.
