Big Second Half Keeps No. 19 Owls Perfect

ONEONTA, N.Y.--The Keene State College men's basketball team shot nearly 60%, erasing a three point halftime deficit in a 104-90 win over SUNY Oneonta on the second day of the Mayor's Cup at Lambros Arena at Hartwick College on Saturday afternoon.

Tale of the Tape

 

  • Six players scored in double-figures for the Owls, led by 22 points for Dizel Wright.  Ty Nichols tossed in 21, and Jaquel Edwards came off the bench to score 17.  Matt Ozzella had 16, Lucas Hammel added 12, and Deonte Vinson marked his collegiate debut with 10 points.
  • As they did on Friday night against Hartwick, the Owls dominated the glass.  Keene State outrebounded the Red Dragons 39-29, and 10-5 on the offensive boards.  Ozzella led Keene State with nine rebounds, with Nichols and Edwards each pulling down eight.  
  • Nichols continued his fine all around play, adding eight assists and five steals.  Through the first three games, the sophomore is averaging 22.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 6.3 assists, shooting 61.1% from the field and 45.5% from three point range.
  • The game was an offensive showing on both sides; Keene State shot 59.4% (41-69) from the field, while Oneonta shot 50.8% (31-61), including 9-19 (47.4%) from three point range and knocked down 19-24 (79.2%) of their free throws.

First Half Highlights

  • The Red Dragons started out the game shooting deep, making their first four three point shots and opening up an 18-11 lead on Mikey McElroy's jumper with 15:06 on the clock.
  • Kevin Mackin's layup with 11:01 to go in the half gave Oneonta a 26-17 lead, but the Owls closed within five on Jeff Lunn's hoop at the 9:14 mark.
  • Oneonta continued to make their threes, taking a 38-27 lead on a triple by Mackin with 6:38 to go, but the Owls went on a 12-2 run over the next two minutes, capped by Wright's layup that made it a one point (40-39) game.
  • After Wright's three tied the game at 47, the Red Dragons went on a 9-3 run before Vinson knocked down a three just ahead of the first half buzzer to cut the lead to 56-53 at the break. 

Second Half Highlights

  • Oneonta picked up where the left off, as McElroy knocked down a three on the Red Dragons' first possession, and Lawrence Coleman completed a three point play at the 16:56 mark for a 65-59 lead.
  • From there, it was all Owls; Keene State went on a 15-2 run over the next 4:33 and never trailed again.  Ozzella tipped in a rebound to get the Owls within two, and Nichols steal and fast break layup tied the game on the next possession.
  • Hammel knocked down a three off a feed from Ozzella, and Nichols had back-to-back baskets and Ozzella again scored down low for a 74-67 advantage.
  • Nichols picked Frankie Kelly's pocket and sprinted the other way for a fast break dunk, that made it 78-69, but the Red Dragons had one final run, getting within 83-79 on a three from McElroy.
  • Ozzella's layup with 2:14 left made it 94-87, and the Red Dragons would not get closer than eight the rest of the way; Wright's dunk with 11 seconds left set the final margin.
