Bears, Bechtel grab first win of the season

Onabor got the Bears on the board with his first of nine total 3-pointers of the contest, at the 19:14 minute mark. St. Joe's answered with six straight points, but at 16:03, Onabor tied the game at eight apiece before he hit once again from behind the arch to take the lead that the Bears would never relinquish. The teams exchanged baskets for most of the first half with St Joe's keeping the game close, but with 1:26 to go the Bears finally got out to a two-digit lead with a three from Onabor. Junior guard Matt Piercey (Odgensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) closed out the half with his own three for the 14-point lead going into halftime.
 
Potsdam opened the second half on fire. Onabor hit a jumper to ignite a 22-12 offensive run. The Bears got out to their largest lead of the game of 24 at 14:59 and the run was capped with a layup from sophomore guard Tanner Stone (Schroon Lake, N.Y./Schroon Lake). St. Joe's twin brothers Sebastien Etheart and Stephane Etheart followed up Potsdam's run with a 14-7 run of their own with the brothers scoring all 14 points that ended at 9:39 when junior captain Kevin Baksh (Queens, N.Y./Richmond Hill) hit a free throw. Both Bear squads went basket-for-basket during the remaining minutes and Potsdam sealed the 85-68 win when the clock ticked to zero.
 
Sophomore guard Tyrone Adeyeye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker) recorded 10 points and five rebounds and freshman guard Jayquan Thomas (Hollis, N.Y./Richmond Hill) tacked on another nine points with four boards. Piercey had a career-high seven points on the night and added three assists.
 
Parra had a game-high 11 rebounds and Sebastien Etheart finished with eight points. Kavan Meiner, Joseph Idyahia and Alec Willis each totaled seven points for St. Joe's, while Stephane Etheart grabbed eight rebounds and recorded six points.
 
St. Joe's edged the Bears in rebounds 44-40, but Potsdam shot 50-percent from behind the arch and 47.5-percent from the floor.
 
The Bears are back following the holiday on Dec. 2-3 when they travel to SUNY Fredonia and Buffalo State to open SUNYAC play. Potsdam will battle the Blue Devils Friday at 5:30 p.m. and the Bengals Saturday at 2 p.m.
