Alma, Mich. - The No. 14 Alma College men's basketball team suffered its first setback at home since the 2014-15 campaign, falling to 18th-ranked Augustana College, 89-77, at Art Smith Arena on Friday (Nov. 18) night.
The loss snapped a 17-game home winning streak for the Scots, which was tied for the longest in NCAA Division III entering the game, and marked Alma's first home loss since December 13, 2014.
Senior Trevor Gernaat (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian/Mid-Michigan CC) paced Alma with a career-high 33 points, including six three-pointers, to lead all scorers, while senior Tyler Edwards (Flint, Mich./Swartz Creek) added a career-high 17 points. Freshman Ryan Stevens(Lowell, Mich./Lowell) contributed a season-high 12 points and led the team with eight rebounds.
Prior to the game, the Scots honored the 2015-16 team that won the program's first ever MIAA Tournament Championship with a special ring ceremony.
"I felt like the first 10 minutes we didn't have much emotion," Head Coach Sam Hargraves said. "Guys were so over-amped up or tight because of all that went on. You have to give Augustana credit. They came in here confident and they wanted to beat Alma at home. I thought they played really intense, and we talked after the game about how we need to compete for 39 minutes, not 30 like I felt we did tonight."
Augustana led 40-36 at halftime, and outscored the Scots 49-41 in the final 20 minutes.
Both teams shot better than 50 percent from the floor as the Scots hit 56.8 percent (25-44) of their shots, including 10 of their 17 attempts (58.8 pct.) from three-point range. Alma, however, committed 24 turnovers while the Vikings gave the ball away 12 times.
The Scots return to Art Smith Arena on Saturday, Nov. 19, to host Finlandia University in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
