St. Lawrence advances to Liberty League title game with 91-85 win at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Riley Naclerio scored 32 points with 14 rebonds to lead St. Lawrence University to a 91-85 win over host Union College in a Liberty League Men's Basketball Semifinal Game Wednesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Saints (14-11) now play at Skidmore for the league championship Saturday while the Dutchmen wrap up the 2015-16 season with a record of 13-12.

Naclerio made 11 of 17 shots and four of six from three point land while missing just one of his seven free throws. Kyle Kobis scored 13 points with six assists and Kyle Edwards and Wilie Zachery had 12 points each for St. Lawrence, which scored 52 points in the second half. Kieran Miller added nine and Kobish dished out six assists with Edwards and Zachery having four each. The Saints and Dutchmen each had 38 rebounds, and the guests shot 48% including 50% in the strong second half while turning the ball over only eight times for the night.

Deshon Burgess led Union with a career high 33 points, making 13 of 19 shots. He was also three for four in three pointers. Wade McNamara had 12 points. Union seniors William Hython and Ryan Whelpley took the court for the final time for Union. Hython had 17 points and 10 rebounds, his 34th career double-double in a Dutchman uniform. Whelpley had 11 points and pulled down eight boards.

Union took a three point lead into halftime, 42-39. In the second half, Union got up by seven at 49-42 with 18:07 left on a layup by Burgess. But the Saints tied it at 49-49 with a 7-0 run over the next 2:00 capped off by a three pointer by Naclerio. It was tied at 52-52 after a Burgess three point play with 15:13 left, but the Saints took the lead for good on a pair of free throws with 14:45 left by Chris Miner to make it 54-52. The Saints got up by nine with 7:34 left and again with 6:35 left (72-63), and Union got as close as five at 75-70 with 3:30 to play after a Burgess layup. But St. Lawrence pulled away and made 12 of 14 free throws over the final 3:19 to seal the victory.

Hython finished his career with 1,092 points, ranking 19th all-time at Union. Burgess will enter his senior year with 1,107 career points, which currently ranks 18th.
