MARIETTA, Ohio — Not every win is pretty.

Marietta's men's basketball team proved it Tuesday night in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal matchup with Wilmington.

The fourth-ranked Pioneers (24-2), who are the top seed, led for almost the entire game but needed a 14-0 run midway through the second half to secure a 93-78 victory in front of 1,481 at Ban Johnson Arena.

In fairness to Marietta, coach Jon VanderWal's team did lead fall but 23 seconds of the game. But the Pioneers couldn't put away the eighth-seeded Quakers (5-19) until about 14 minutes into the second half.

Junior A.J. Edwards, who was the OAC Player of the Week last week, had another strong outing with 22 points and 10 rebounds — despite foul trouble. He was also an impressive 11-of-11 from the foul line.

Marietta jumped out to an early 11-3 lead thanks to a hot start by senior Luis Garcia. He hit back-to-back three-point baskets after opening the game with a layup. Garcia finished with 16 points as he became the 30th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points.

Two other Pioneers reached double-digit scoring — Dillon Young with 16 and Brennan McKean with 10. Young also had nine rebounds, while Eddy Grenert and Jack Thome each had eight points off the bench.

One of Marietta's strengths all season has been its play in the post. The Pioneers outscored Wilmington 44-24 in the paint and outrebounded the Quakers 51 to 36.

Wilmington gave the Pioneers its best shot all night. Christian Jones led all scorers with 26 points, and added six rebounds, six assists and five steals. Nathan Scott and Will Patrick each had 11 points as the Quakers season comes to an end.

The Quakers made 12-of-31 three-pointers — three each from Jones, Patrick and Scott. Marietta had a solid advantage from the foul line as the Pioneers hit 25-of-32, while Wilmington was just 10-of-13.

Marietta is back in action at 7 p.m. Thursday against fourth-seeded Baldwin Wallace (16-10). The Yellow Jackets eked out an 86-83 win over Ohio Northern Tuesday.
