Four Bearcats scored in double figures as Saint Vincent defeated Chatham University by a score of 80-65 to advance to the semifinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference playoffs.
Saint Vincent maintained a balanced offensive attack throughout the first half, shooting an impressive 50% from the field. Senior Jaylon Bell drained a three to get the Bearcats on the board first with 18:13 left in the period. After a Chatham drive, Austin Ford maneuvered in the post for a basket and Bell netted his second trey to make the score 8-2. The Cougars responded with a three of their own, but freshman Mike Simmonsdemonstrated that the Bearcats felt comfortable from range too, connecting on the third SVC trey of the night.
Bell found classmate JC Howard for an easy layup on a fast break and Ford continued to work in the post, scoring his second field goal of the contest to give the Bearcats a 15-7 lead. Howard and Dan Sinwellconverted back-to-back threes to grow the Bearcat advantage to 12 midway through the first half. Sinwell continued to shoot, draining a long two before Howard hit another uncontested trey to give the Bearcats a 30-14 lead with 5:08 left in the period.
Four Jones' free throws and another Sinwell three grew the Bearcat lead to 20, as Saint Vincent headed into the locker room leading the Chatham Cougars 39-19 at the half.
For the Bearcats, Howard and Sinwell contributed 8 points apiece, while Bell added 6. For the Cougars, Josh Randall scored 5.
Following a Chatham and-one play to start the second half, Bell found his scoring groove netting 8-straight to give SVC a 47-22 lead with 15:56 left in the game. After a Chatham three, Bobby Swartwout hit two from the charity stripe to extend the advantage to 24. Following another Bell basket, the Cougars began to fight back, scoring 11 straight to shrink the Bearcat lead to 16.
Howard was able to slow the Chatham attack, grabbing a rebound and finding the basket to end the SVC drought. Jones scored in the lane and Sinwell hit his third trey of the night to make the score 63-40 Saint Vincent. The Cougars continued to find the back of the net, while the Bearcats battled to hold onto their lead. Jones scored on a floater with 6:28 left, followed by a drive a few possessions later to make the score 70-55 SVC. Howard converted under the hoop and Jones hit a huge trey to close out the game as the Bearcats defeated Chatham 80-65 to advance to the semifinals of the PAC tournament.
Saint Vincent had four players contribute double figures, with Bell leading the way with 18. Jones netted 17 while Howard contributed 12 and Sinwell scored 11. For Chatham, Randall had 18 and Logan Hunter scored 10. The Bearcats out rebounded the Cougars 47-23 and shot 48% from the floor compared to Chatham's 37%. Bobby Swartwout led SVC with 9 boards.
The Bearcats, seeded #1 in the tournament, will host #7 Westminster College on Thursday (February 25) at 7PM. Westminster advanced with an upset victory over #2 Grove City College. SVC has defeated Westminster twice this season.
