PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Two new chapters were added to story of the 2015-16 Plattsburgh State men's basketball team following its 93-62 win over North Country rival SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday night at Memorial Hall.
For the second-straight season, the Cardinals clinched the regular season SUNYAC title and the right to host the conference semifinals and championship game.
Underscoring that was senior Edward Correa entrenching himself into the 1,000-point club, a feat that only 14 other players have accomplished in the history of the program.
Correa, who 33 days ago became the program's all-time leader in three-point field goals, hit a contested trey from approximately six feet beyond the three-point line 2:01 into the second half to evenly reach 1,000 points for his career. The Bronx, N.Y., native is the first Cardinal to register 1,000 career points since current Student Assistant Coach Shamoy McIntosh did so last season.
Correa's senior teammate Xavier Thomas shined for Plattsburgh State on Wednesday night. The Brooklyn, N.Y., product posted a game-high 15 points, going a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. All of his attempts from the charity stripe occurred in the first half.
The game got off to a slow pace as both teams struggled from the field early. Plattsburgh State used an 11-4 run to jump out to a 20-12 lead eight and a half minutes into the game.
The Cardinals' big man off the bench, Jonathan Patron, rattled off six straight points in the paint to up the home team's advantage to 30-19 with 7:30 showing on the clock.
Plattsburgh State would go scoreless for the next two minutes, but SUNY Potsdam was unable to advantage, and shot just 32.3-percent (10-for-31) in the opening stanza.
After scoring back-to-back layups on consecutive possessions in the game's first five minutes, Correa picked up two fouls and would not be a factor until late in the first half. Coming into the game just 14 points away from reaching the milestone, Correa caught fire and ignited the Memorial Hall crowd by knocking in a pair of triples with less than two minutes remaining. The second of those long range hits ultimately became a rare four-point play as the senior was fouled when taking the shot and made the free throw.
The Bears remained in close contention with the Cardinals for much of the first half, but Plattsburgh State took command of the game over the final three minutes, limiting SUNY Potsdam to just two points while scoring 13 in that stretch, taking a 47-30 lead into the break.
Plattsburgh State seemed to gain more energy as the second half progressed. The Cardinals notched 14 points off of fast breaks and dished out 11 assists as their lead continued to grow.
The team's scoring leader Kyle Richardson tallied six of his 12 points during a stretch of 1:12 early in the second half, which saw the Cardinals up their lead to 25.
With the game out of reach, head coach Tom Curle emptied his bench, with several players turning in nice performances.
Freshman Isaiah Johnson posted his first 10-point game of his career, while sophomore Tim Smith set a career-high with 7 points, helped out by going 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
With the win, No. 23 Plattsburgh State improves to 19-4 overall and 14-2 in the SUNYAC, clinching the conference's top seed heading into the playoffs. The Bears' loss puts them at 1-22 overall and 1-15 in the SUNYAC.
Having wrapped up the regular season title, the Cardinals have just two games remaining on their schedule, which will come on the road this weekend. Plattsburgh State will contend with two teams that have also qualified for the conference playoffs. First up for the Cardinals is a Friday night affair with Brockport, a team that came into Memorial Hall last month and left with a win. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
