MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Feb. 14, 2016) – The Sewanee men's basketball team locked up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament by defeating rival Rhodes 65-53, Sunday, inside Mallory Gymnasium.

The Tigers now have a 16-7 overall record and a 9-3 mark in league play. Centre sits two games behind Sewanee in the league standings with two games to play. However, the Tigers hold the tiebreaker after defeating the Colonels twice this season. With the win, Sewanee also swept rival Rhodes for the first time in a season since the 2008-09 campaign.

After a close first half in which Sewanee led by one, 23-22, the Tigers opened up their lead to start the second half.

The Tigers came out of the locker on an 18-7 run the first six minutes of the second half. Rhodes answered back with a scoring spurt of its own. A three by Andrew Lowrie opened a 9-0 run by the Lynx. That cut the Tiger lead to two, 39-37, with 9:48 to play.

Sewanee responded with a three by Brody Stone and three straight points from Keshonn Carter.

Eventually, Sewanee pulled away over the final five minutes of the game when Jacob McCullough, Seth Brown, Carter, and Stone made key shots.

In fact, the Tigers outscored the Lynx 14-5 the final 1:28.

Overall, the Tigers made 45.0 percent of their attempts. On defense, Sewanee forced 18 turnovers and limited Rhodes to a 5-of-23 effort beyond the three-point arc.

Individually, Carter led Sewanee with 20 points and four rebounds. Stone pitched in 12 points and seven boards while McCullough continued his great play with 11 points. McCullough has now scored in double figures five of the last six games.

Forward Daniel Galvin led Rhodes with 18 points.

Sewanee returns to action with an 8:00 p.m. contest at home against Oglethorpe, Friday.
