Corsairs Down RIC, 84-71

North Dartmouth, Mass.-UMass Dartmouth senior guard Jordan Rezendes (Onset, MA) scored a game-best 31 points to lead the Corsairs to a 84-71 victory over Rhode Island College in Little East Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night.

 

The Corsairs (13-9, 6-5 LEC) opened the game on a 23-9 run over the first 11:28 of the game, capped by a pair of free throws from freshman forward Atakan Akcam (Hoosac Falls, NY). The Anchormen (4-18, 3-8 LEC) rallied, with a three-pointer by sophomore guard Chris Green (Taunton, MA) cutting the deficit down to eight, 28-21, with 4:16 remaining in the half. RIC continued to keep the game within a single-digit deficit before a Rezendes' trey with three seconds remaining in the first half sent the Corsairs into the break with an 11-point, 38-27, lead.

 

RIC shot 30.3 percent (10-for-33) in the half, while UMD shot 40.6 percent (13-for-32) from the field as a team.

 

The Anchormen began the second half quickly, with a three from Green cutting the deficit down to six, 46-40, with 14:43 remaining in the contest. UMD's defensive effort proved to be too much over the next six minutes, with the Corsairs upping their advantage to 12, 64-52, with 8:15 remaining in the game. The Anchormen's offense battled, but Rezendes was able to go 7-for-7 from the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the 13-point, 84-71, victory.

 

RIC shot 37.3 percent (25-for-67) from the field, 30.0 percent (6-for-20) from three-point range and 83.3 percent (15-for18) from the charity stripe. Freshman guard Jimmy Fritzson (Sharon, MA) led the way with 20 points and four rebounds, while Green tossed in 17 points for the Anchormen. Junior forward Terrance Tribble (White Plains, NY) contributed six points and grabbed seven boards in the loss.

 

The Corsairs shot 47.6 percent (30-for-63) from the field, 36.8 percent (7-for-19) from downtown and 70.8 percent (17-for-24) from the free throw line. Rezendes' 31 points led all scorers, while also chipping in eight assists and five rebounds. Freshman center Nick Portelance (Fairhaven, MA) notched a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds in the victory.

 

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will continue Little East Conference action at Southern Maine on Saturday, Feb. 13 (1 p.m.).
