NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport jumped to an early 7-0 lead Wednesday night, and never trailed at the Freeman Center against Mary Washington. The Captains, ranked sixth in the country, took advantage of 12 three-point field goals and posted a 79-68 victory over the Eagles for their 12th straight win.

CNU is now 21-1 overall and 15-0 atop the Capital Athletic Conference.

"We hit some big shots," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "Earlier in the season, we were a bit intimidated by zone defenses, but I think we've gotten more and more comfortable. You give us those shots, and we're going to hit a large number of them."

The Captains ended up 12 for 30 from beyond the arc for 40 percent shooting from distance. Six different Captains connected on three-point field goals. Overall, CNU was 27 of 59 from the floor for 46 percent.

Christopher Newport opened a 12-point lead at halftime, 44-32, and the Eagles never got closer than five in the second stanza. Mary Washington ended up out-scoring CNU in the second half, 36-35. CNU's 12-point advantage in the first half was its biggest lead of the night.

The Captains were led by sophomore Aaron McFarland's 16 points off the bench, which included three triples. Sophomore Marcus Carter posted his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Junior guard Kevin Regimbal and junior big man Tim Daly recorded ten points each. Senior Connor Laframboise, who has seen limited playing time this season, was first off the bench for CNU. He responded by making three of five three-pointers for nine points.

CNU dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Eagles, 41-26. The Captains allowed just four offensive rebounds all night, as the Captains had 15 second-chance points to none for Mary Washington.

Sophomore forward Brendon Burrows scored all eight of his points in the opening half, and also pulled down seven rebounds for the Captains. Senior big man Hunter Wetherell recorded a game-high seven assists and also posted five rebounds.

Guard T.J. Jones, the leading scorer in the CAC, led the Mary Washington attack with 18 points. Sophomore forward Eric Shaw registered a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds for the Eagles, who fell to 11-11 overall and 7-8 in conference play.

The victory for CNU was the second over UMW this season, and the Captains now hold a 23-6 lead in the all-time series. CNU clinched the regular-season title in the CAC last Wednesday, and is now 10-1 at the Freeman Center. The Captains are also the top team in the Mid-Atlantic regional rankings released on Wednesday.

"Our focus is and always has been this season on the next game," Krikorian continued. "We're not looking ahead or looking past anyone. This league is too good, you've got to be prepared every night."

Christopher Newport will now prepare to play its final road game of the regular season on Saturday when the Captains travel to Pennsylvania to take on the Spartans of York College (9-13, 5-10). Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The Captains are 11-0 on the road for the season, and beat York at the Freeman Center on January 16th, 72-53.
