Boston, Mass.--Sophomore guard Roosevelt Shider (Meriden, CT) and freshman forward Justin Campbell (New Haven, CT) combined to score 33 points off the bench as the Anchormen fell to Little East Conference foe UMass Boston, 64-63, on Saturday afternoon. |
The two teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the first half, with a layup by Shider with 9:49 remaining in the first stanza putting RIC (4-17, 3-7 LEC) up by four, 14-10. The Anchormen would push their advantage to eight, 22-14, following a pair of made free throws by junior forward Terrance Tribble (White Plains, NY) with 5:16 remaining in the opening half. The Beacons (6-14, 2-8 LEC) rallied down the stretch however, with back-to-back layups from junior forward Dan Powers (Westwood, MA) trimming the deficit down to three, 25-22, entering the halftime break. |
The Anchormen shot 34.5 percent (10-for-29) from the field in the opening frame, while holding the Beacons to just 26.5 percent (9-for-34) shooting from the floor. |
The Beacons opened the second half quickly, with four straight points by Powers knotting the game at 30, with 16:16 remaining in the contest. RIC was able to extend its advantage up to eight, 46-38, following an old fashioned three-point play by Campbell with 10:10 remaining in the second half. |
UMB rallied again, trimming the deficit down to one point following a made three-pointer by sophomore guard Maurice Magras (Medford, MA) with 3:45 left in the game. The Anchormen would be plagued by inconsistent foul shooting down the stretch, making just 1-of-6 during crunch time. |
UMass Boston would take advantage of the Anchormen's struggles at the charity stripe, slowly chipping away at the lead to set up their heroics. Following a missed free throw, The Beacons' Quadry Allen (White Castle, LA) raced down the left side of the court and made a scoop shot in the lane to put Boston up one, 64-63 with one second remaining. A late half-court heave by the Anchormen wouldn't fall as the Beacons were able to avenge their Jan. 9 loss to the Anchormen. |
RIC shot 44.2 percent (23-for-52) from the field, 33.3 percent (7-for-21) from downtown and 45.5 percent (10-for-22) from the charity stripe. Campbell's 17 points were tied for the game high, while Shider's 16 points came on 4-of-7 shooting from long range. Freshman center Jason Jones (Roxbury, MA) grabbed a team-best 12 boards in the loss. |
