Brooklyn Stunned at Buzzer By York in Double OT Thriller

Brooklyn, NY---Looking like the game might have gone into a third overtime, York's freshman forward Ryan Smart would get one to go at the buzzer on an inbound from under the their own basket that gave the Cardinals the 96-94 double overtime victory.  The Bulldogs drop to 16-5 overall and 9-4 in the CUNYAC with the loss; York moves to 7-14 and 4-8 with the victory. 
 
Trailing by two points with 24 seconds remaining in the fourth period, the BC junior guard Chris McIllhatton would steal the ball on a York pass down the sideline, miss the contested fast break lay-up, but senior guard Dillon Williams collected the offensive rebound and was fouled on his put-back.  He hit both free throws to tie the game before York's heroics.  Williams was the one who knocked down the three-pointer with :36 left in the first overtime that forced the second.  He also hit a clutch three-pointer that helped the Bulldogs pull within two points of the Cardinals with :45 remaining in overtime.  That three led to senior guard Egzon Gjonbalaj's game-tying free throws with: 22 left in regulation, which eventually forced the first overtime period. 
 
York would take a 45-35 lead in the first minute of the second half.  However, the Bulldogs would go on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 47 on a senior forward Dennis Balsam made jumper.  The game would turn into a dogfight for the rest of regulation. 
 
The Cardinals led through the entire first half starting at the 17:20 mark.  They would lead by as many as 14 points in the opening period.
 
Turnovers plagued the Bulldogs in the first half, committing nine, leading to a number of Cardinal fast-breaks.  The Cardinals also grabbed 10 offensive boards to the Bulldogs' three in the opening period.
 
The Cardinals out-rebounded the Bulldogs 58-40 for the game.
 
Egzon Gjonbalaj led all scorers with 28 points despite fouling out in the first overtime period.  He also led the Bulldogs with 19 rebounds.  Senior forward Lorenzo Williams and Dillon Williams added 18 points apiece. 
 
Smart finished with a 21-point, 23-rebound performance for the Cardinals. 
 
The Bulldogs will play their final regular season home game on Friday, February 5, as host to Hunter College in CUNYAC action.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 PM.  It will be Senior Day and eight Bulldogs will be honored prior to tip-off following the completion of the women's game, which starts at 5:00 PM.
