UMHB men race past McMurry 86-70

Abilene, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team used a red-hot shooting effort to dominate the game and the Cru rolled to an 86-70 victory over McMurry Saturday afternoon in Abilene. UMHB improves to 7-12 on the season with the win. The loss drops the Warhawks to 3-17 on the year. Games against McMurry do not count in the American Southwest Conference standings with the Warhawks reclassifying to NCAA Division III.

 

McMurry held an early 6-4 lead, but the Cru answered with an 11-0 run and never looked back. UMHB led 20-9 with 12:59 remaining in the first half for the first double-digit lead of the game and continued to stretch it out from there. The lead would reach 20 points for the first time at 37-17 with 5:04 left in the first half and the Cru led by as many as 34 points in the half before settling for a 54-22 lead at the break. UMHB shot 66 percent from the field in the first half and hit 8-9 from three-point range. The Cru slowed its shooting pace a bit in the second half, but remained in control of the game. McMurry would not get closer than 15 points the rest of the way as UMHB cruised to the win.

 

Demarius Cress led a balanced Cru scoring attack with 16 points and Russell Green added 13. Daniel Mills also reached double figures with 11 points and 12 different players scored for UMHB in the victory. Layton Zinsmeister had a team-high six rebounds to go with eight points and six assists. The Cru shot 61 percent overall as a team and went 9-18 from three-point range. UMHB also hit 25-36 from the free-throw line and out rebounded the Warhawks 39-23 in the victory.

 

Blake Cochran led McMurry with 18 points and Nate Estrada scored 11 while hitting 3-6 from beyond the arc. The Warhawks shot 38 percent from the field as a team, but did hit 11 of 29 from three-point land. McMurry was 11-15 from the charity stripe.

 

The Cru will now return home for a return to ASC play on Thursday. UMHB will welcome U.T.-Dallas to the Mayborn Campus Center for a 7:30 PM tip-off.
