Cortland Edges Oneonta, 79-74, in SUNYAC Men's Action

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) made five 3-pointers and finished with 20 points and a career-high six assists as Cortland edged visiting Oneonta, 79-74, in SUNYAC men's basketball action. Cortland (12-4) and Oneonta (11-5) are now tied for third place in the league standings with 6-3 conference marks, a half game behind second-place Geneseo.

Estarfaa made 5-of-7 shots from the 3-point arc, 6-of-10 overall, and hit 3-of-4 free throws. Carrel Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Deer Park (NY)) finished with 16 points and T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) totaled 15 points and matched his career best with six rebounds.

Also for Cortland, Justin Cooper (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) scored nine points and pulled in seven rebounds and Justin Rivera (Bardonia/Clarkstown South) tallied a career-best eight points on 4-of-7 shooting.

Five Oneonta players scored in double figures. Lawrence Coleman recorded a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Mikey McElroy finished with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists and Ian Schupp scored 11 points. Jack Dignan and Jackson Zuvic poured in 10 points apiece, with Dignan also registering eight assists, four steals and seven rebounds.

Oneonta led 31-23 with 4:26 left in the first half and 38-34 at halftime. Cortland took a 46-44 lead with 17:25 left in the game on an Estarfaa 3-pointer, and the game remained tight the rest of the way.

Cortland held seven-point leads four times, the last at 73-66 with four minutes left on two Estarfaa free throws after a technical foul was assessed on the Oneonta bench. The guests, however, used 3-pointers by Coleman with 2:11 left and Schupp at the 1:25 mark to cut Cortland's lead to 73-72.

Hefele responded with a long 3-pointer with 53 seconds left to put Cortland up by four. Oneonta missed a shot with 39 seconds left and committed a foul a few seconds later. Cortland missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and Oneonta grabbed the rebound, but Hefele made a diving steal on the outlet pass and called timeout with 24 seconds left.

James Morales (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) hit a free throw with 16 seconds left to push the lead to five. Oneonta missed a 3-pointer, but converted a steal into a foul and two Dignan free throws with 2.8 seconds left to make it a one-possession game. Morales, however, sealed the win with two foul shots with two seconds remaining.

Cortland shot 47 percent from the field, 55 percent in the second half, and the Red Dragons made 11-of-24 (46 percent) from the 3-point line. Oneonta shot 41 percent overall and 29 percent (8-of-28) from the arc. Both teams had troubles on the foul line, with Oneonta at 52 percent (12-of-23) and Cortland at 61 percent (14-of-23).

Cortland will host New Paltz Saturday at 4 p.m.
