NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's basketball team earned a Skyline victory over SUNY Maritime College, 81-70, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Thursday evening. The Maccabees advance their record to 8-7 overall, and 6-4 in Skyline contests, while the Privateers drop to 4-14 overall, and 4-9 in conference play.
Yeshiva was led by senior forward Shelby Rosenberg, who scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the double-double. He also forced four steals, had just as many assists, and blocked three shots. The senior had the touch, as he shot 12-18 from the field.
Yeshiva narrowly outscored Maritime, 35-33, in the first half despite only shooting 39% in the game's first 20 minutes. In the second half, Yeshiva found its rhythm, converting on 59% of the shots the team took in the final period. As a result, the Maccabees outscored the Privateers, 46-37, in the final 20 minutes of play.
With Yeshiva down by one early in the second period, the home team changed the direction of the game by outscoring Maritime, 15-4, in the next 5:42 to take a commanding 50-40 lead, with 13:41 left in regulation time.
After the Privateers were able to slice the deficit in half, junior forward Michael Berg fed the ball to senior guard Yosef Rosenthal, who nailed a three-point basket to extend the Maccabees' lead to 59-51, with 9:16 remaining.
Yeshiva was able to build a 69-57 advantage, but Maritime would not go down without a fight, scoring nine unanswered points to make it a one possession game, with just over four minutes left. The Maccabees scored the game's next five points, capped off by a three-pointer from senior forward Joseph Ammar, to give the home team a 74-66 advantage. That put the game out of reach for Maritime, as Yeshiva was able to pull away for the Skyline victory.
In the opening half, Yeshiva trailed by as many as four, but Rosenthal's three-point basket capped off a 7-0 run to help the Maccabees jump out to a 26-23 lead, with 4:27 remaining in the opening stanza. During that run, Yeshiva held Maritime scoreless for 5:10. The Maccabees took a two-point lead into the intermission, but then dominated the second half to earn the victory.
For the game, senior guard Shaje Weiss tallied 14 points, Ammar produced nine points, and Rosenthal added six. Freshman guard Jamie Cappell and classmate Judah Cohen each scored five points and produced two steals.
Yeshiva will be back in the Max Stern Athletic Center on Saturday, for a Skyline Conference matchup with Mount Saint Mary. Tip-off is slated for 8:30 p.m.
