Nazareth races past Houghton, 100-73

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore Tyler Stenglein scored a game-high 25 points and was one of five Nazareth players to produce double-digit point totals Wednesday as the visiting Golden Flyers dominated Houghton from start to finish for a 100-73 men's basketball victory in an Empire 8 Conference game.

The victory was the fourth straight for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 12-6 overall and 8-1 in conference play. Houghton is 8-9 overall and 3-6 in tthe Empire 8. It was Nazareth's second victory over the Highlanders this season.

Stenglein's 25 points came on 8-for-10 shooting from the field and 9-for-11 shooting from the foul line. He also had five assists and three steals. Senior Maurice Mills added 21 points and 10 rebounds and senior Mitch Ford had 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Freshman Brandon Wind came off the bench to add 15 points and four assists and senior Nick Nadeau contributed 10 points.

The Golden Flyers shot a blistering 62.7 percent from the field (37-for-59) in the game, including 67.9 percent (19-for-28) in the first half to shoot down the Highlanders, who shot just 37.5 percent (27-for-72) in the game.

Nadeau scored the first basket of the game in the opening minute and junior Josh Gillard followed with a basket and a three-point field goal as the Golden Flyers were racing to an 11-2 lead and never trailed. Johnathan Stowe scored 17 points for Houghton, including a basket with 12:30 left in the first half to bring the Highlanders to within two, 15-13. A basket by Stenglein and two by Wind triggered a 12-3 scoring run that ended with the Golden Flyers ahead 27-16 with 8:27 left in the half.

The Highlanders stayed within striking distance, but a basket by sophomore Mitch Keniston and a free throw by Wind in the closing minute left Nazareth with a 49-36 lead at the half. Nazareth's lead continued to grow in the second half as Mills scored the first five points and Ford added a basket to give the Golden Flyers a 56-36 lead. Mills had 17 of his points in the second half and Stenglein had 11.

The victory enabled Nazareth to maintain its hold on first place in the Empire 8 Conference standings. St. John Fisher, Hartwick and Ithaca also won Wednesday to keep pace. The Golden Flyers are back home Saturday to play Ithaca at 2 p.m.
