Randolph Comes up Short at E&H

EMORY, VA – In a game of runs, the Randolph College men's basketball team went on a 17-9 run late in the second half versus Emory & Henry, but fell short 64-60 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Monday night.

The WildCats started the game off well with a three-pointer by Corey Brown on their first possession of the game. However, E&H went on a 25-9 run to take a 13-point lead halfway through the first half.

Randolph used strong team defense and eight unanswered points in three minutes, six of them by Zach Desgain and two by Remele Hicks, to bring the 'Cats within two points. Emory & Henry responded going on 12-2 run to hold a 37-25 lead. The two teams went back and forth for the rest of half, but the Wildcats carried momentum into the second half as Brown hit a three to score the last points of the first half and bring the WildCats within single digits at halftime.

The 'Cats carried that momentum into the beginning of the second half.  Randolph came out aggressive getting to the free throw line on three separate occasions in the first seven minutes of the half and cutting the Emory & Henry lead to four points.

The Wasps replied by going on a 9-1 run in two minutes to extend its lead to 55-43. Jason Eddie responded and ignited another 'Cats run by hitting a three-pointer, Brown followed that up with a three-pointer of his own. The WildCats then scored another seven points over the next three minutes, while holding Emory & Henry to two points in that span.

With 2:17 remaining in the game, Josh Freund made a jumper to tie the game at 58-all. Cliff Conley scored a basket of his own on the next possession to give Emory & Henry the lead back. Both teams played strong defense the next two possessions until Desgain scored two points to tie the game up 60-60 with just under a minute left in the contest.

In the next offensive possession, Myles Turner hit a tough pull-up jump shot to score two of his team high 12 points and give the Wasps a 62-60 edge.

Randolph had one more opportunity to tie the game, but the shot was just off target.  E&H hit two free throws down the other end to seal the victory.

Desgain finished with a game-high 19 points, while grabbing a team-high six rebounds.  Brown added 13 points in game.  Turner was the only Wasp (10-7 overall, 4-4 ODAC) to finish in double-figures, ending the game with 12 points.

Randolph (9-8, 3-5) continues its road trip, heading to Roanoke College (15-2, 7-1) on Wednesday night.  Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
