PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – In a rare Sunday afternoon contest, the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team was able to overcome SUNY Geneseo knocking in 14 three-pointers to defeat the Knights by a 98-87 score at Memorial Hall.

The Cardinals get right back in the win column after having their eight-game winning streak snapped on Saturday and move to 13-3 and 8-1 in the SUNYAC. The Knights fall to 5-3 in conference games and are 11-4 overall.

In what would best be described as a shootout, the Knights proved that the eighth-best three-point shooting team in the country would not be stopped by the best team defensively against the three in the nation. Geneseo was unstoppable from long range in the first half and at one point was shooting over 60-percent from beyond the arc. The Knights went 10-of-19 (52.6-percent) from three-point range in the first half and finished 14-of-37 (37.8-percent) for the game.

Plattsburgh State was equally as efficient shooting, as the Cardinals shot 50.8-percent (33-of-65) from the floor, including 12-of-29 (41.4-percent) from downtown.

The two teams wasted no time setting the pace of play, as Edward Correa connected by way of a triple on the first possession of the game before Kevin Crockett completed an old fashioned three-point play.

Geneseo began its three-point barrage down 8-3 as the SUNYAC's leading scorer Justin Ringen made his first of four triples on the afternoon. Despite scoring 22 points, Ringen was held in check by the Cardinals defense, as he shot just 4-of-13 from downtown and 8-of-19 for the game.

The play of the game came just prior to the 12-minute mark of the first, as senior Kyle Richardson blocked a Crockett attempted three, grabbed the rebound and drove down the court, throwing down a dunk over two Knights defenders.

Senior Xavier Thomas for the second-straight day performed extremely well on both sides of the court, as the Brooklyn, N.Y., native helped the Cardinals keep pace with the hot-shooting Knights in the first. Thomas, who averaged just over 10 points per game entering Sunday's action, totaled 13 points and 7 rebounds in the opening stanza.

With the game tied at 27 and 8:23 showing on the clock, Geneseo took control by making three consecutive three-point attempts.

After Plattsburgh State missed its first seven free throw attempts, Thomas got the Cardinals off the schneid, as he made from the charity stripe with 2:26 left in the first, cutting the Geneseo lead to 44-38.

John Decker would make a layup on the ensuing Knights possession, but the Cardinals would not allow Geneseo to score over the final two minutes of the first half.

Sophomore Eli Bryant played a huge part for Plattsburgh State at the end of the first, as he scored five points in the final minute and twenty seconds, including hitting a three with three seconds left that gave the Cardinals a one-point lead heading into halftime.

Edward Correa and Kyle Richardson paced Plattsburgh State for most of the second half, as they poured in 15 and 13 points respectively.

Following Correa's fifth triple of the afternoon at 14:42, sophomore Zack Coleman followed with a three of his own to give the Cardinals a 62-57 lead. Coleman made both of his long range attempts during the game.

Decker would be a force for the Knights, however as he seemed to either make every shot he took in the second half or draw a foul and head to the line. The junior was a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe in the second half and was 13-of-14 overall.

As the game progressed into the final 10 minutes, both teams traded baskets and the score remained within one possession.

The Cardinals, however, would break through with about three minutes left. Leading 84-77, Richardson stole an attempted pass to the top of the key and raced down the court uncontested, throwing down his second monster dunk of the game. That would take the air of the Knights, as they were unable to climb back.

Despite all the missed free throws early in the game, the Cardinals were clutch in the waning moments, as they made their final 12 attempts from the line, including eight in the final minute.

Correa finished with a team-high 26 points and six assists on 9-of-22 shooting and 6-of-16 from beyond the arc. Thomas, Richardson, Bryant, and Jonathan Patron would all finish in double figures in points. The freshman, Patron would also grab a game-high 11 rebounds.

Decker finished with a game-high 27 points for the Knights.

Plattsburgh State will hit the road next weekend with for a pair of contests with Buffalo State and Fredonia. Friday night's contest with the Bengals is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
