CORTLAND, N.Y. – Edward Correa scored 16 points to lead three Plattsburgh double-figure scorers as the Cardinals held off Cortland, 75-68, in a SUNYAC men's basketball matchup.

Plattsburgh maintained its lead in the SUNYAC standings with a 6-0 mark and is now 11-2 overall. Cortland slipped to 4-2 in the conference and 10-3 overall.

Seven of Correa's points came on free throws in the final 1:03 after Cortland had cut a 14-point deficit to four. He also registered six rebounds. Xavier Thomas finished with 14 points (6-of-9 field goals) and four assists and Jonathan Patron scored 13 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Also for the Cardinals, Kyle Richardson added nine points and seven rebounds despite missing most of the first half due to foul trouble, and Eli Bryant tallied eight points and dished out four assists.

JP Reagan (Cortland) led the Red Dragons with 16 points and grabbed five rebounds. Dre Hampton (Bronx/Frederick Douglass Academy) made 5-of-8 shots and ended with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) and Carrel Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Deer Park (NY))) tallied 11 points each. Grequan Carter (Queens/Campus Magnet) paced the squad with four assists.

Cortland struggled with its shooting, especially from the 3-point arc. The Red Dragons finished at 35 percent overall and only 13 percent (5-of-39) from long distance. Plattsburgh hit 47 percent of its field goals, 32 percent (7-of-22) from the arc, but was only 1-of-10 from 3-point range in the second half after making 6-of-12 in the opening period. Both teams also had troubles at the foul line with Plattsburgh making 16-of-30 attempts (53 percent) and Cortland 11-of-19 (58 percent).

Plattsburgh led 9-0 five minutes into the game and 22-10 with 11:10 left in the half. Cortland got to within 37-30 on a Hampton jumper with 1:10 left, but Patron's two layups in the final minute gave the Cardinals a 41-30 halftime advantage.

Cortland quickly cut its deficit to five on 3-pointers by Joseph and Estarfaa in the first minute of the second half. The Red Dragons got as close as three points on a few occasions, the last at 49-46 on a Carter layup with 14:35 remaining, and Cortland missed a potential game-tying trey on its next trip down the floor. Plattsburgh then went on a 14-3 run over the next six minutes and led 63-49 with 8:34 left.

Cortland made one last push with a 9-0 run, including seven points by Hampton, and trailed 63-58 with 4:49 remaining after two Reagan foul shots. The Red Dragons cut the score to 67-63 on a Hampton layup with 1:41 left, and Plattsburgh missed a 3-pointer on its next possession but was able to grab the offensive rebound. Correa hit the second of two free throw attempts with 1:03 left to put Plattsburgh up five. After Cortland missed a trey, Plattsburgh missed two free throws but again came up with a key offensive rebound. That led to two Correa free throws with 40 seconds left, and the closest Cortland got from that point was five on a T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) 3-pointer with 15 seconds left.

Cortland will play at Geneseo on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
