YORK, Pa. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team bounced back for its second Capital Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon, using a 43-point second half to coast past York College of Pennsylvania.
Sophomore D'Ondre Stockman posted a game-high 23 points to pace the Saints' offense that shot 44.4 percent from the floor. Stockman knocked in three long balls for the game to go with his 10-for-11 free-throw shooting. Senior Danny Ferry dropped in a game-high four three-pointers, totaling 14 points for the day, while dishing out three assists and registering a tied game-high three steals.
It was an early back-and-forth battle through the opening 16 minutes before the Saints took their final lead that held until the end. Trailing 18-17 to the Spartans at the 4:37 mark of the first half, MU answered quickly on the next offensive series when Stockman knocked down his second three-pointer of the afternoon to swing the advantage in favor of the blue and white.
York's Dalton Myers drew the game even one last time on their next possession, but Marymount answered with four free throws, two by Stockman and two by freshman Tyler Beale, to claim the final lead.
The Saints closed out the first half on a 5-2 run, including an and-one finish by Beale, to carry a 29-24 advantage into the break.
YCP looked to cut the deficit to open the second half with an early layup by Myers, but MU's defense held the Spartans to just those two points through a five-minute stretch while sophomore Dimitri Rucker powered in for a layup to kick off the Saints' scoring. Stockman followed with an and-one finish at the rim before senior Colin Burkhart added a layup of his own.
The three pointers continued to roll out for Marymount, seeing two fall in for Ferry and Stockman and junior Jesse Longmire each registering one over the next five minutes of play, pushing the advantage to double digits, 50-40.
In an effort to close the gap, York started sending MU to the line with three minutes remaining in regulation. Through the stretch, the Saints saw 20 opportunities at the line, hitting 17 of them to seal up the 72-53 victory.
Beyond Stockman's 23 and Ferry's 14 points for the afternoon, senior Rick Narcisse also notched double-figures with 11. Burkhart finished with a well-rounded statistical line, registering a game-high seven rebounds, a game-high four assists, a tied game-high three steals, and eight points.
The men are back in action on Wednesday, January 13, as they take on Penn State University-Harrisburg at home in a conference matchup. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m., in the Verizon Sports Arena.
