More news about: Lancaster Bible

The Lancaster Bible men's basketball team won its 10th straight game on Saturday as the Chargers defeated Penn St. Abington, 108-60 at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers are now 10-0 this season and 4-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. Lancaster Bible remains one of six unbeaten teams left in NCAA Division III.

How it Happened: Just two days after scoring 64 points in the first half en route to a 109-52 win over Penn College, the Chargers did themselves four points better as Lancaster Bible erupted for 68 points in the opening 20 minutes. Though Lancaster Bible shot well the entire half, Penn St. Abington matched them early on as the Chargers led by just two at 14-12 after a layup from Devin Jones with 14:45 to play in the first half. Lancaster Bible made Penn St. Abington pay for every mistake it made however and the Chargers eventually build a 16-point lead, 33-17, after back-to-back 3-pointers from Bryce Williams, the second of which came with 10:39 remaining.

The Chargers continued to build their lead and took a 20-point lead at one point before the Nittany Lions answered back and cut the deficit to 42-27 thanks to a Yusef Savage 3-pointer with seven minutes to play in the first. A quick 9-2 run over the next 1:29 gave Lancaster Bible its largest lead of the game at 51-29. Lancaster Bible would eventually take a 26-point lead with 1:12 to play in the first thanks to yet another Williams 3-pointer. The junior guard had 21 of his game-high 23 points in the first half and seemingly made a shot from everywhere on the floor.

The 68 points is a school-record for points in a half and is the third time the Chargers have eclipsed the 60-point mark in one half this season.

In the second half, both teams struggled to maintain their offensive output from the first half, but Lancaster Bible slowly continued to build its lead and took a 30-point lead at 84-54 with 10:31 to play after a Jon Bird layup. The Chargers allowed just 16 points in the second half and got a great defensive effort from everyone on the squad as both teams emptied their benches with just over seven minutes to play.

Senior Luke Roundy had four points and six rebounds in his best game of the season, while freshman Tyler Baughman had another strong game off the bench with two points and two boards.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 57.3 percent (43-of-75) from the floor, including a 63.4 percent (26-of-41) mark in the first half...Penn St. Abington shot 47.2 percent (17-of-36) in the first half, but made just six shots the entire second half...Williams finished 8-of-15 from the floor, including a 6-of-11 mark from 3-point range...Sophomore Herbie Brown had 16 points and five rebounds in one of his best games of the season, while senior Jordan Mellinger added 16 points and five assists, including one 3-pointer that went in from midway between the 3-point line and the half-court line...Kurt Keltner and Dondre Perry each had 12 points, while Keltner added 11 rebounds and four assists...Senior CJ Dunston had a terrific all-around game with eight points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and four steals...Savage led the Nittany Lions with 19 points on 8-of-20 shooting.

The Coach Says: "Overall I'm very pleased with how we played today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Zach Filzen said. "Offensively we were phenomenal in the first half. We made the extra pass, found the open guy and knocked down shots. The guys have bought in to what we are trying to do offensively and we are doing a great job on that end of the floor."

On how the team played defensively..."We were OK defensively today," Filzen said. "I thought we did some things well in the first half, but Abington made some great plays and hit some shots to stay in the game. At halftime we talked about a few things and then did a great job in the second half limiting them to 16 points."

Looking ahead to next weekend's New York trip..."We want to put together a full game were we execute on both ends of the floor for a full 40 minutes," Filzen said. "We had a good week, but there are still things we can improve upon going forward."

On measuring the team through 10 games..."It's exciting to see what we've done so far, but it's even more exciting to see what could happen going forward," Filzen said. "We need to keep growing together and putting forth good effort at practice each day and for a full 40 minutes each game."
