SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 8, 2016) – Very few Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opponents have won inside Juhan Gymnasium since the league started in 2012-13. That trend continued Friday night as the Sewanee men's basketball team won its 10 straight home SAA contest with a 65-56 victory over rival Hendrix.
The Tigers have not lost on their home floor to a league team the past two seasons. Sewanee also extended its current season's winning streak to four straight games. The Tigers are now 9-4 overall and 2-0 in SAA action. Hendrix fell to 1-12 overall and to 0-2 in league competition.
Like they did at Centre last Sunday, the Tigers got off to a quick start against the Warriors.
Sewanee led 10-8 after a Jorden Williams with 13:05 left in the first half. That opened a 16-2 run over the next eight minutes for the Tigers. During that stretch, Sewanee showed how balanced its offense is. The Tigers had points from Keshonn Carter, Jacob McCullough, Clay Born, Hunter Buescher, and Seth Brown.
After a free throw by Hendrix's Bryce Parker, and a three by John Ogle, Brody Stone pushed Sewanee ahead by 13 with a three with 3:16 left.
Eventually, Sewanee led by 14, 32-18, at halftime.
After making 48.3 percent of their attempts in the opening 20 minutes, the Tigers went 11-for-24 in the second half. Sewanee built its largest lead of the game, 38-18, with a jumper by Carter with 16:55 to play.
Hendrix finally pulled back to within single digits late in the game when a three by Preston Smith went in with 1:22 left.
However, Sewanee answered back with five free throws down the stretch to close any chance of a Warrior comeback.
Individually, Carter led Sewanee is scoring with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. The Nashville, Tenn., native also finished with seven rebounds, one steal, and two blocks. McCullough was the only other Tiger in double figures with 10 points. Overall, Sewanee had nine players score in the game.
Ogle led Hendrix and all scorers with a game-high 19 points. He was joined in double figures by teammate Smith who finished 6-of-9 from the floor.
Sewanee will look to remain atop the SAA standings with a key conference game against rival Rhodes on Sunday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
