Four in double figures pace Gordon over UNE

WENHAM, Mass. -- Sam Johnson and Noah Szilagyi each recorded 18 points to lead the Gordon College men's basketball team to an 83-64 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) decision over the University of New England on Tuesday evening (Jan. 5) at the Bennett Center.

Together, Johnson and Szilagyi shot 15-of-20 from the floor, helping the Fighting Scots (5-6, 2-2 CCC) to 54 percent as a team and 48 percent from long range (including Szilagyi 4-for-5). Eric Demers and Jake Haar chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Garrison Duvivier pulled in a game-high 13 boards, and Johnson hauled in 12 more, as the hosts secured a 46-34 advantage on the glass.

For UNE (6-4, 1-2 CCC), Ben Judson tallied 17 points. CJ Autry posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.Drew Coveney finished with seven points, nine assists, and five rebounds.

Gordon was up by five (13-8) with just over eight minutes gone, before Szilagyi and Haar drained two treys apiece and combined for 14 points in a four-minute run that put the Fighting Scots ahead, 31-14.

The Nor'easters reduced the deficit to 10 (41-31) by halftime, and trimmed it to eight on three consecutive trips early in the 2nd half, but Johnson was there each time to restore the double-digit edge. 

UNE returns home to face Curry College on Thursday (7:30 p.m.).
