SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Senior Taylen Alexander tallied 19 points, but the Wittenberg Tigers held home court as the Tigers defeated the Earlham College men's basketball team 74-58 at Pam Evans Smith Arena on Tuesday.
The Quakers began the contest scoring in three of their first five possessions. Alexander hit two free throws to give Earlham a 7-4 edge just over three minutes into the contest.
The Tigers (7-3) would take their first lead at the 14:25 mark when Chad Roy hit a pair of free throws to make the score 10-9. Alexander willed Earlham to another lead at 17-15 as the Champaign, Ill., native scored eight straight points for Earlham in a three-minute span.
Wittenberg then clamped down on defense, allowing Earlham seven points in as many minutes. The Tigers, on the other hand, netted 20 points giving the hosts a 35-24 edge.
Trailing by 13 at halftime (45-32), Earlham got within 10 points on several occasions, but failed to get the deficit within single digits.
Alexander led all scorers with his 19 points while sophomore Elijah Wilson-Thomas added 11 as the other Quaker to finish in double figures. Both also dished out three assists.
Roy led Wittenberg with 17 points off of the bench. Three other Tigers, Garrett Dorfman, Chris Sloneker, and Jaelin Williams, also scored in double figures.
Earlham returns to action for the consolation game of the Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic tomorrow. The Quakers will face Centre College (Ky.) at 2:15 p.m. The Colonels fell to Washington U. (Mo.) 75-67.
