MEN'S BASKETBALL: Delaware Valley University 64, Elizabethtown College 37
DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University used a suffocating defense to force 23 turnovers and hold Elizabethtown College to 25.4 percent shooting from the field as the Aggies won its eighth straight with a 64-37 home victory.
DelVal continued its best start in program history as head coach Casey Stitzel's squad upped its record 8-1 on the year. The Aggies will look to tie the school record for consecutive wins (nine set in 2012-13, en route to the conference championship) when they host Immaculata University on Thursday, December 17. Tuesday's loss dropped Elizabethtown to 2-8.
DelVal allowed its lowest point total in at least 25 years as the Aggies limited the Blue Jays to just 15 field goals in 59 attempts, including a 6-for-34 effort (17.6 percent) in the first half. They turned the 23 Elizabethtown miscues into 22 points and also blocked nine shots on the evening.
DelVal was not at its finest on the offensive end, shooting just 34.3 percent from the field overall and 29.7 percent in the first half. And when Dylan Krieger hit a layup with 9:49 left in the opening stanza, the Blue Jays were within two at 13-11.
However, DelVal scored the next 15 points in the game and kept Elizabethtown off the scoreboard for nearly nine full minutes. Five different players scored in the run with Tyrea Williams emphatically notching the last two on an alley-oop slam off a feed from Tyliek Kimbrough. Jake Sweger scored inside with 54 seconds left in the half to end the Blue Jays' drought, but they trailed by 15, 28-13, at the break.
Elizabethtown had the opening basket of the second stanza, but it would never get closer than 13 the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Aggies upped their advantage to as many as 29 on three separate occasions and Stitzel was able to give all 15 players time on the court once again.
All five DelVal starters saw less than 30 minutes of action with three finishing in double digits in scoring. Kimbrough led the way with 14 points and five assists while Barry Brockington had 12 points and four boards. Alex Matsinye poured in 10 points while Chris Moran added six points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Williams came off the bench to provide five points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots in 21 minutes of action.
The Blue Jays, who were without leading scorer Matt Lapkowicz (14.2 avg), were led by Josh Eden's 13 points. Matt Siegler and Krieger had eight and seven points respectively with Krieger also pulling down a team-best nine rebounds.
