POTSDAM, N.Y.- SUNY Canton (8-0) controlled the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-8) Sunday afternoon at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium with a score of 85-60. Freshman forward Vincent Smythe (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) led the Bears with 12 points and five boards, tying his career high, while Roos' junior guard Sam Annorh (Queens, N.Y./Pathways College Prep) finished with 24 points.
Canton's offensive ignited right out of the gate. The Roos went on a 12-2 run during the first four minutes of play. The run was started with a three from Annorh and Bear freshman forward Nate Wyatte (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) ended the run with a three of his own, but the Roos weren't finished. After an alley-oop dunk, Canton continued to show their scoring muscles with a 24-3 run. At 6:31, senior guard Mitch Lamerson (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) made a layup to start a 12-3 run for the Bears. It was capped with a jumper from senior guard Joe Estramonte (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich). The Roos took their lead into the break.
Canton continued their strong offensive showing into the second half and Bears increased their scoring effort from 31-percent from the field in the first half to 42-percent in the second, but it was too little, too late on gaining ground on the Roos' lead. Canton took the 85-60 victory.
Freshman forward Serigne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) finished with a career-high 11 points and eight rebounds, while Wyatte tied his previous career-high from last night's matchup with 10 points.
Junior forward Romario Fletcher (Queens, N.Y./Pathways College Prep) tallied 13 points and senior guard Vonallen Pickett (Brooklyn, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) added 12 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Kam Peterkin (Harlem, N.Y./Man. Center for Science and Math) rounded out the double digit scoring with 10 points for Canton.
