WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates men's basketball team led by as much as 13 points in the second half but fell to Colby College in a non-conference game by a score of 78-74 in overtime on Saturday.

Mike Boornazian '16 (Portland, Conn.) led all scorers with 23 points and Mike Newton '16 (Chapel Hill, N.C.) contributed a double-double off the bench (13 points, game-high 12 rebounds, both career-highs) for the Bobcats (4-3).

But the Mules (6-1) hit a three-pointer with time running out in regulation to force overtime and eventually pulled out the victory.

Bates led by seven at halftime and by 13 with 7:15 to go in the game after a Boornazian layup. But the Mules went on a 17-2 run to take the lead. Foul trouble plagued the Bobcats as Malcolm Delpeche '17 (Wilmington, Del.) and Josh Britten '16 (Yarmouth, Maine) fouled out down the stretch. Colby got to the free throw line 36 times in the contest, making 23 of their attempts. Bates only got to the line 17 times, making 13 of their free throws.

The game was incredibly tight as both teams finished dead even in rebounds (46 each) and turnovers (16 each).

Bates regained the lead and then some near the end of regulation. A Marcus Delpeche '17 (Wilmington, Del.) free throw with 1:09 to go gave the Bobcats a one-point lead. Boornazian drove in for a layup with 19 seconds left in the contest to extend the Bates lead to 66-63.

But Ryan Jann stunned bates with a deep three-pointer to tie the game with 10 seconds to go in regulation. Bates couldn't score on the other end and the game went to overtime.

Bates never led in the extra period as the teams traded buckets to start. With the game tied at 72, Colby went on a 6-0 run to take the lead for good.

Four of the five starters for the Mules finished in double figures, with Sam Wilson leading the way with 20 points. Wilson (10 boards) and Patrick Stewart (15 points, 10 rebounds) both notched double-doubles.

Marcus Delpeche contributed 16 points and seven rebounds for Bates, while Newton had the best game of his career, hitting five of nine shots on the night.

Bates is back in action at Alumni Gym on Monday, December 21 as they take on Southern Vermont at 5:30 p.m.
