Richardson’s 22 Help Cardinals Sprint Past Oneonta, 85-67

More news about: Plattsburgh State

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team finished off a weekend State University of New York Athletic Conference road sweep with an 85-67 drubbing of host Oneonta on Saturday afternoon at Dewar Arena.

Entering the day matched with identical records, the Cardinals used a boost on offense midway through the first to take command of the game.

Plattsburgh State trailed by as much as five in the opening half, but as has been key on many occasions so far this season, Edward Correa came up firing on target from behind the arc.

The senior from the Bronx, N.Y., drilled a pair of threes on back-to-back possessions with just over seven minutes left in the first to turn a one-point deficit into a five-point lead for the Cardinals at 25-20. Correa bounced back from a rough shooting night on Friday, going three-of-four from three-point range this afternoon.

After shooting 51.7-percent and limiting Oneonta to just 33.3-percent from the field in the first half, Plattsburgh State held a 10-point lead at the break.

The Red Dragons were threatening after a Mike McElroy triple cut the Cardinal lead to four, eight minutes into the second, but Richardson showed why he's a top threat this season in the SUNYAC.

The Baldwin, N.Y., native was all over the court, collecting five points, two offensive rebounds, and swatting two blocks away in a span of two and a half minutes midway through the half. On the afternoon, Richardson scored a game-high 22 points and had a team-high nine rebounds, while also posting four assists, three steals, and two blocks.

Leading comfortably as the clock wound down, the Cardinals drove to the hoop at ease and attempted 26 shots from the free throw line in the half.

Sophomore guard Zack Coleman turned in a nice performance, scoring 13 points and collecting seven rebounds.

Coming off an excellent shooting display last night, sophomore Eli Bryant put forth a balanced effort against the Red Dragons, notching 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, and four steals.

Plattsburgh State improves to 2-0 in the SUNYAC and 4-1 overall, while Oneonta drops to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Cardinals will take a breather from SUNYAC action and face four straight non-conference opponents, beginning with Middlebury on the road next Saturday. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m.
