Greenaway's 36 Powers Wildcats Past Anchormen, 92-71

Providence, R.I.--Johnson & Wales senior guard Quarry Greenaway (Westchester, NY) poured in 36 points and added six rebounds as the Wildcats roared past Rhode Island College, 91-72, in non-conference action played at The Murray Center on Tuesday night.

 

The Wildcats (6-1) took a commanding lead early, with a pair of free throws by Greenaway extending their lead to eight, 23-15. RIC (1-8) responded by cutting the deficit down to three, 23-20, on a layup by junior center Tony Ojih (Lincoln, RI). Greenaway then took the game over, scoring the next eight points to balloon the Wildcats' advantage to 11, 31-20. JWU outscored the Anchormen 20-14 over the last 6:57 of the frame to take a commanding, 51-34, lead into halftime.

 

Greenaway continued his stellar play in the second stanza, throwing down a fast break dunk to extend the JWU lead to 26, 63-37, with 15:29 remaining in the game. The Anchormen were unable to stop the high-flying Wildcats, as JWU maintained at least a 20-point margin until a late three by freshman guard Jordy Brito (Pawtucket, RI) made the score, 91-72, to end the contest.

 

RIC shot 45.3 percent (24-for-53) from the field and 74.1 percent (20-for-27) from the charity stripe as a team. Sophomore guard Chris Green (Taunton, MA) led RIC with 19 points, while junior forward Alex Cruz (East Hartford, CT) scored a career-best 16 in the setback.

 

The Wildcats shot 49.2 percent (32-for-65) from the field and a blistering 52.6 percent (10-for-19) from downtown as a team. Greenaway's 36 points led all scorers with senior guard Tom Garrick (Seekonk, MA) also eclipsing 20 points with a 23-point effort. Junior guard Anthony Jernigan (East Hartford, CT) nearly recorded a double-double with 10 points and nine assists.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at MIT on Thursday, Dec. 10 (7 p.m.).
