Lycoming Outlasts Men's Basketball 78-66

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Christian Roberts totaled all 17 of his points in the second half, but Lycoming College took control midway through the second half to down Stevenson University 78-66 in MAC Commonwealth basketball Saturday afternoon at Lamade Gymnasium.

Roberts, the MAC Commonwealth's leading scorer entering the game at 23.0 ppg, was held scoreless over the first 20 minutes but finished 5-11 behind the arc and 6-16 overall en route to his 17 points for Stevenson (2-5, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth).  Senior Joe Kiely scored 10 of his season-high 13 points in the first half and also handed out eight assists, while classmate Erik Fisher added nine points.

Lycoming (5-1, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth) was led by Nykolas King, who paced four Warriors in double figures with 16 points.

A Steven Zink three-pointer 4:45 into the second half gave Stevenson its first lead of the game, 38-37, capping a 14-6 Mustang run.  The guests stretched the lead to four three times before, trailing 48-44, Lycoming went on a 10-0 run to take a 54-48 lead with nine minutes to go on a pair of David Johnson free throws. 

A three by Roberts on the next Stevenson possession halved the lead with 8:38 left, but Lycoming outscored the Mustangs 17-5 over the next seven minutes to open a 71-56 lead with 2:28 left, extending the larger Warrior run to 27-8. Lycoming maintained a double-digit cushion the rest of the way.

Stevenson never led in the first half, falling behind 11-4 in the game's first five minutes.  The Mustangs trailed 26-18 with just over three minutes to go in the first frame before they reeled off six straight points to pull within two, 26-24, 2:06 before intermission when Sean Mayberry made 1-of-2 at the line.  Lycoming took a 27-24 lead into the locker room.

Lycoming took 32 more trips to the free throw line in the contest, going 29-42 while the Mustangs were 6-10.  Stevenson shot 44.1% in the second half and 40.3% in the game while limiting the Warriors to 36.9% shooting, but Lycoming held a 52-33 rebounding advantage, including 23-10 on the offensive glass.  The hosts generated a 15-9 lead in second chance points and also held a 21-8 lead in points off turnovers after the Mustangs, who entered the game ranked in the top-25 nationally in fewest turnovers per game, committed a season-high 18 giveaways.

The Mustangs are idle until next Saturday, December 12, when they travel to Widener University for a 3:00 MAC Commonwealth contest.
