Newcomb Scores Career-High 31 Points to Lead Mariners Past Terriers

CASTINE, Maine – Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball team to a 74-64 victory over Thomas College on Tuesday night in North Atlantic Conference action.

The win marks the Mariners' first victory over the Terriers since January 29, 2011.

The Mariners jumped out to a 6-0 lead, following three points from both Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) and Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine) and never relinquished the lead.

Thomas tied things up at 10-10 with 13 minutes remaining in the first quarter, but the Mariners responded with seven-straight points to take a 17-10 lead at 8:45, and took a 35-25 lead into halftime.

The Terriers closed the lead to six points at 14:50 following a three from Mike Akanji, but the Mariners took their biggest lead of the game (59-46) at 6:04, following five-consecutive points from Newcomb, and never looked back.

Newcomb added four rebounds, two assists and two steals to go along with his 31 points, while Tyler Thayer(Hermon, Maine) added 12 points and three rebounds. Dylan Price (Madison, Maine) led the Mariners with seven rebounds, while Zachary Radcliffe (Rumford, Maine) tallied a game-high three steals, while contributing nine points.

Adam Carlsen led the Terriers with 14 points, and Tyheem Simon added 12 points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist, and Carlos Gonzalez pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Maine Maritime improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the NAC, while the Terriers fall to 2-4 on the season, and 0-1 in conference play. The Mariners return to action on Saturday when they travel to take on Husson University.
