Three Pointers Reign Supreme In Thumping of St. Joseph's

ARLINGTON, VA --- The Runnin Royals turned into the Bombing Royals Saturday afternoon, connecting on 15 three pointers en route to a 98-70 drubbing of St. Joseph's (Long Island).  EMU's men shot 50% from long range as they move into Sunday's championship game of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament in Arlington, Va., to take on host Marymount at 3:30pm.

Maleke Jones (Charles Town, W.V./Washington) started the parade by drilling a three pointer on the men's first possession.  The Golden Eagles answered with a layup, but the Royals kept going and never trailed.  Jerome Jones (Charlestown, W.V./Washington) hit back-to-back threes to balloon the lead to 33-16 with 5:31 left in the half.

Eastern Mennonite by as many as 19 in the frame before taking a 39-24 cushion into halftime.

The men opened the second half right where they left off, getting triples from Jerome Jones and Isaiah Harris-Winn (Frederick, Md./St. Maria-Goretti) to push the lead past 20.  They put up 59 points in the final 20 minutes and were never threatened.

Jerome Jones came one short of EMU's record for three pointers as he drilled 7-of-8 long balls for a game best 23 points.  Xavier McCants (Olney, Md./Sherwood) came off the bench but had his best collegiate game with 17 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and two steals.

Khalil Davis (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) went off for 16 points with three assists.  Harris-Winn had 12 points and six boards while Sammy Thomas (Owings, Md./Northern) had nine points and nine rebounds.

Fernando Vazquez had 21 points and nine rebounds to lead St. Joseph's.

Besides out-shooting the Golden Eagles 45.3% to 32.8%, EMU had had a 50-37 rebounding advantage with 18 offensive boards.

Marymount beat Medgar Evers 90-65 in the other men's game at the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament.
