MARIETTA, Ohio — Dillon Young hit a short jumper with one second left on the clock to lift No. 11 ranked Marietta College to a 92-90 victory over No. 6 ranked Catholic University Saturday (Nov. 21) in the championship game of the 45th annual Shrine Tournament.

Catholic battled back from a 14-point second half deficit as the Pioneers struggled to slow down the Cardinal tandem of Bryson Fonville and Jay Howard. Fonville poured in 36 points and dished out seven assists, while Howard posted a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

Howard tied the game at 71 with a layup at the 7:38 mark and then Kyle Phanord drained one of his five three-pointers to cap a 27-10 run and give Catholic its first lead of the half, 74-71.

Marietta countered with a balanced attack. Four different Pioneers scored in the final 1:53 as both teams battled to the final buzzer. Brennan McKean put Marietta up by four, 88-84, with a three-pointer.

The Cardinals answered with a jumper from Corey Stanford and a layup from Austin calling to knot the game at, 88-88, with 56 seconds left on the clock. A.J. Edwards sank a pair of free throws only to see Fonville even the score at 90.

Following a timeout, the Pioneers inbounded the ball with 12 seconds on the clock. Young took the ball just outside the three-point arc on the left side and drove through the lane and launched a short jumper from the block that dropped in for the winning bucket.

All five of Marietta's starts finished in double figures. Edwards earned the Cliff Rose Most Valuable Players award after leading the Pioneers with 20 points and seven rebounds. Luis Garcia earned all-tournament honors after sinking three three-pointers and finishing with 15 points and five assists.

Young and McKean also chipped in with 15 points each. Young had seven assists and five boards, while McKean sank four treys. Eddy Grenert added 12 points and six rebounds.

Marietta's bench also played significant minutes. A.J. Ireland added eight points and Jack Thome had five point and blocked three Cardinal shots.

Fonville and Howard were both named to the all-tournament team for Catholic. Phanord notched 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from behind the arc.

Marietta shot 49.1% (27-of-55) from the floor, 51.9% (14-of-27) from three-point range and 92.3% (24-of-26) at the line. Catholic was 38-of-69 (55.1%) from the floor, 8-of-19 (42.1%) behind the arc and 6-of-11 (54.5%) at the line.

The Pioneers edged Catholic on the glass, 35-30. The Cardinals turned the ball over just seven times, while Marietta committed 12 turnovers.

In the consolation game, Methodist defeated La Roche 78-73. Tabias Hilliard represented Methodist on the all-tournament team, while Arnes Bajgora earned all-tourney honors for La Roche.
