Cortland Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat Cobleskill, 85-61, at Cortaca Classic

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland went on an 36-7 run midway through the second half to pull away from a tight game and the Red Dragons defeated SUNY Cobleskill, 85-61, during the first day of the Cortaca Classic at Ithaca College.

The Red Dragons (2-0) will return home on Saturday to host the second day of the tournament. Ithaca will play Cobleskill at 2 p.m. and Cortland will face Bridgewater St. (Mass.) at 4 p.m. in the predetermined schedule.

Senior Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) led a balanced attack with 15 points. He hit 4-of-8 shots from the 3-point arc and dished out three assists. Sophomore Zach Lydon (Elizaville/Stissing Mountain) scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while senior T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) and freshman Justin Cooper (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) scored nine points apiece.

Senior JP Reagan (Cortland) led the Red Dragons with six rebounds, while Cooper and senior Grequan Carter (Queens/Campus Magnet) pulled down five boards each. Sophomore James Morales (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) registered team bests of four assists and three steals.

Cobleskill (0-3) was led by Brian Jackson with 13 points. Christian Cooper and Frank D'Esti scored 11 points each and Ralph Erickson handed out four assists.

Cortland shot 62 percent from the floor in the second half (21-of-34) and 52 percent for the game. The Red Dragons hit 39 percent (11-of-28) of its 3-pointers. Cobleskill finished at 40 percent from the field overall and 35 percent (8-of-23) from the arc.

Cortland led 34-33 at halftime, but the Fighting Tigers started strong in the second half and took a 46-40 lead on a Jackson 3-pointer with 15:06 remaining. Cortland eventually tied the game at 49-49 on two Lydon layups, the second at the 13:47 mark, and Lydon's trey gave the Red Dragons the lead for good just over a minute later.

Those seven points by Lydon were the start of Cortland's decisive run that finished with the Red Dragons leading 81-56 with 2:45 left. Hefele and Lydon each finished with seven points and Cooper scored six points during that 36-7 streak.
