GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College flirted with a school record for 3-point success in an 87-70 victory over the University of Rochester in non-conference men's basketball action tonight. The Statesmen made 17 triples on the night, one off the school record set in 2009.

Hobart's Class of 2019 led the way with four players in double digits. First-year Jamal Lucas scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds for his first career double-double. He was 8-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. First-year Sean McKinless also made three 3-pointers and scored a season-high 16 points. First-year Colin Dougherty was 5-for-5 from the floor (3-for-3 from deep) and finished with 13 points. First-yearMatt Walsh rounded out the quartet with 12 points, including a pair of threes. In all, seven different Statesmen made at least one 3-pointer.

Rochester also placed four players in double figures led by junior Sam Borst-Smith's 19 points and game-high five steals. First-year Michael Mangan added 14 points off the bench while junior Zack Ayers and senior Jared Selzter contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. Ayers also grabbed a team-high eight boards.

The Yellowjackets (0-1) forced two Hobart turnovers in the first 90 seconds to jump out to a 5-0 lead, but the Statesmen countered with 16 straight points to take the lead for good. Lucas started the run, coincidentally, on a traditional 3-point play. Dougherty made the first long-range 3 of the game and after UR misfired on at the other end of the floor, Lucas drained a 3 for a 14-5 Hobart lead five minutes into the game.

The Statesmen (2-0) stretched their advantage to as many as 24 in the first half, taking a 45-21 lead on three free throws by McKinless with 2:39 remaining. The Yellowjackets scored the final six points of the half to go into the break trailing 45-27.

Hobart made 58 percent of its shots in the first half, including 10-of-19 from long range, and went 7-for-7 at the free throw line. The Statesmen shot 52 percent from the floor and beyond the arc, while making 67 percent of their free throws. Rochester shot just 39 percent, 3-of-9 from beyond the arc, and 50 percent at the line in the opening 20 minutes. For the game, the Yellowjackets shot 42 percent from the floor, 32 percent from deep, and 63 percent at the line.

In the second half, each time the Yellowjackets tried to make a run, a Statesman stepped up and made a 3. The visitors were within 16 five minutes in, but then Walsh made a 3 to spark a 9-2 Hobart run. Rochester got within 17 by the midway through the half, but Lucas dialed long distance to make it a 20-point game. When Borst-Smith converted a layup with 8:32 to go, junior Thomas Campion hit a 3.

UR closed the gap to just 14 with 1:59 remaining, but Walsh made a layup and junior Pete Drescher a 3 to make it a 19-point game entering the final minute.

Hobart will travel to Scranton on Saturday, Nov. 21 for a 5 p.m. tipoff against the Royals. The Yellowjackets will return home to face Keystone on Friday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m.
